Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential election, has stated that Nigeria must make deliberate investments in agriculture to overcome food insecurity.
Obi made this statement through his spokesperson, Ibrahim Umar, during a press conference in Abuja on Friday.
He was speaking in response to a food security update report released by the World Bank, as reported by the Nigerian News Agency (NAN).
While discussing the report, Obi compared Nigeria’s worsening food security crisis to that of war-torn countries like Yemen, highlighting the significant increase in people facing severe food shortages and hunger.
“I believe these reports, although tragic, only provide a brief glimpse into the reality of the food crisis and the severity of hunger,” he said.
“For years, I have stated that shifting our focus from consumption to production is the safest way to address food insecurity and help the country out of the current crisis.”
“I have also clearly expressed that our country’s greatest asset lies in its vast demographic and the large areas of uncultivated land in the North.”
“Therefore, we need to make deliberate investments in agriculture,” he added.
The Labour Party leader regretted that a state like Niger, which is twice the size of the Netherlands in terms of land, is unable to feed its own population or that of the country.
Pointing out that the Netherlands exports agricultural products worth over $100 billion each year, he stressed the need for Nigeria to prioritize agricultural investment.
He noted that this could tackle the insecurity that keeps farmers away from their fields and help in adopting modern mechanized farming methods.
He stated, “If we can do this, we will be able to fight hunger and achieve food security for the nation.”
