Freeport, Illinois (WIFR) – Local high school students are getting a hands-on experience in the world of agriculture.
At the Northwest Illinois Agriculture Industry Expo, hosted by Highland Community College in Freeport, around 150 high school juniors and seniors networked with at least 40 regional employers.
Olivia Keppner is an instructor in Highland’s agriculture program. She explains that the industry offers a variety of paths, from animal science to biotechnology.
Keppner stated, “In our rotation, we show them how our classes work and the networking part is really about exploration for them.”
The American Farm Bureau Federation estimates that 2.4 million agriculture jobs need to be filled across the country. In fact, Newsweek reports that over 140,000 American farms have been forced to shut down in the past five years due to a labor shortage. Keppner points out that as the agriculture workforce ages, there will be an increasing need for younger workers.
Keppner said, “It’s harder for students to enter the industry. I think our program is really trying to help those students find opportunities who may want to start their own farm, return to their family farm, or stay in the industry to fill those gaps.”
College students were given the opportunity to speak with potential employers in fields that matched their interests. Second-year student Alia Whitney was among those who took the chance to advance her career.
Whitney said, “This will help me make connections and build partnerships with different industries. Maybe one day I will work with them, or someday I’ll reach out to them with my questions or about something else.”
She encourages people who have never considered a career in agriculture to explore it, as they may be surprised by what they find.
“I hope more people understand what agriculture is about. I don’t like that people don’t know where their food comes from,” Whitney said. “I don’t like that people don’t realize that everything starts from agriculture.”
Highland has recently added Cannabis Studies to its curriculum, which also includes agricultural business, crop and soil science, and food science.
