नाइजीरियाई संग्रहीत उत्पाद अनुसंधान संस्थान के कार्यकारी निदेशक, प्रोफेसर लतीफ सन्नी ने कहा है कि फसल के बाद के नुकसान के कारण कृषि वस्तुओं की कीमतों में वृद्धि हुई है।

उन्होंने कहा कि फसल कटाई के बाद होने वाले नुकसान में 25 प्रतिशत की कमी से देश में खाद्य कीमतों में बढ़ोतरी की समस्या का समाधान हो जाएगा।

सन्नी ने मंगलवार को क्वारा राज्य में राष्ट्रीय युवा सेवा कोर के 50 चयनित सेवारत सदस्यों के लिए अनुदान पुरस्कार प्रस्तुति और पांच दिवसीय प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रम के उद्घाटन समारोह के दौरान बात की।

कार्यक्रम में, क्वारा राज्य के इलोरिन में एनएसपीआरआई ने अपने स्मोक्ड मछली व्यवसाय को बढ़ावा देने के लिए एक कोर सदस्य, मिस ज़ैनब एडम को N2 मिलियन का अनुदान प्रदान किया।

सन्नी ने देश में कृषि जिंसों की कटाई के बाद 40-55 प्रतिशत नुकसान के प्रभावों पर अफसोस जताया और कहा कि वैश्विक स्तर पर करीब 200 मिलियन डॉलर का नुकसान हुआ है। उन्होंने कहा कि नाइजीरिया में फसल कटाई के बाद होने वाले वार्षिक नुकसान का 10 प्रतिशत हिस्सा 5 अरब डॉलर से कम नहीं है।

उन्होंने बताया कि देश में फसल कटाई के बाद के नुकसान का असर कृषि वस्तुओं की ऊंची कीमतों में दिखाई देता है।

“लाभार्थियों में से एक ने पाउच में टमाटर का पेस्ट दिखाया। यदि हम देश में केवल टमाटरों पर काम कर सकें, क्योंकि वे उत्तर में बहुत प्रचुर मात्रा में हैं, और यदि लोगों के लिए कुछ घरेलू सुविधाएं स्थापित की जा सकती हैं, तो इससे हमें काफी मदद मिलेगी, ”उन्होंने कहा।

एनएसपीआरआई निदेशक ने यह भी कहा कि फसल कटाई के बाद के नुकसान में कमी से किसानों और कृषि प्रसंस्करणकर्ताओं के बीच आय के नुकसान में कमी आएगी।

“आर्थिक रूप से, आय के नुकसान में कमी आएगी और किसानों, प्रोसेसर, लोडर, ऑफ-लोडर आदि के पास अधिक पैसा होगा। यह उन उत्पादों पर लागू होता है जिन्हें महीनों तक संग्रहीत किया जा सकता है और लंबी दूरी तक ले जाया जा सकता है।

साथ ही बोलते हुए, कृषि और ग्रामीण विकास के लिए राज्य आयुक्त, श्रीमती ओलोरुंटोयोसी थॉमस ने कोर सदस्यों को मूल्य संवर्धन, फसल के बाद के नुकसान और अनुदान की प्रस्तुति पर कौशल सिखाने के लिए एनएसपीआरआई की सराहना की।

आयुक्त ने कहा कि संगठन के प्रयास कोर सदस्यों को उनके भविष्य के प्रयासों में सफलता की ओर महत्वपूर्ण रूप से प्रेरित करेंगे, साथ ही यह भी कहा कि यह देश में कृषि परिदृश्य को भी बदल सकता है।

एनवाईएससी राज्य निदेशक, ओनिफेड जोशुआ की ओर से बोलते हुए, योजना में एक निदेशक, श्रीमती ओमोलबाके अडेनियी ने कहा कि कुल 8,000 में से 50 कोर सदस्यों का चयन किया गया था, उन्होंने लाभार्थियों को अवसर का पूरा उपयोग करने की सलाह दी।

He mentioned that reducing post-harvest losses by 25% would help resolve the issue of rising food prices in the country.

Sunny spoke at the inauguration ceremony of a five-day training program and an award presentation for 50 selected members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Tuesday in Kwara State.

During the event, the NSPRI awarded N2 million to a NYSC member, Ms. Zainab Adam, to promote her smoked fish business.

According to the agency established by the federal government to research the preservation of agricultural produce, Zainab has excelled in reducing post-harvest losses in her business.

The NYSC members who benefited from the 2023 grant awards were engaged in smoked fish business activities and were introduced during a training program titled “Skill Acquisition for Core Members on Value Addition of Agricultural Products” organized by Synergy Impact Consultants Limited.

Sunny expressed concern over 40-55% post-harvest losses of agricultural commodities in the country, estimating the global loss at around $200 million. He stated that Nigeria’s annual post-harvest losses account for no less than $5 billion, which is 10% of the total.

He explained that the impact of post-harvest losses is reflected in the high prices of agricultural products in the country.

“Why? Because what little we have cannot serve over 230 million people. If we can reduce post-harvest losses by even 25%, it would be hard for anyone to claim that prices are high. This would enable everyone in the country to have intermediate products that can be stored for a few days before processing.”

“One of the beneficiaries showed a pouch of tomato paste. If we focus on tomatoes, which are abundant in the north, and if we can establish some local facilities, it would greatly help us,” he added.

The NSPRI director also mentioned that reducing post-harvest losses would decrease income loss for farmers and agricultural processors.

“Economically, reducing income loss will mean more money for farmers, processors, loaders, off-loaders, etc. This applies to products that can be stored for months and transported over long distances.”

“Additionally, job opportunities would also be created. If we can reduce post-harvest losses, the implication is that a natural influx of young people will engage in storage and post-harvest transportation activities in peri-urban areas, generating traffic in those environments,” he said.

Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyin Thomas, praised NSPRI for teaching core members skills in value addition, post-harvest losses, and grant presentation.

The commissioner noted that the organization’s efforts would significantly motivate core members toward success in their future endeavors and could also change the agricultural landscape in the country.

Speaking on behalf of NYSC State Director, Onifed Joshua, program director, Mrs. Omolabake Adeniyi, mentioned that 50 core members were selected from a total of 8,000 and advised the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity.
