Irish farmers are ramping up their campaign against the EU-Mercosur trade deal, claiming it will flood the Irish market with beef that doesn’t meet their standards.
This deal, which would reduce import tariffs on goods from four South American countries, was signed in 2019 but still has not been implemented.
Environmentalists are also opposed, arguing that the deal would compromise efforts to reduce carbon emissions due to increased shipping of products.
Frances Gorman, president of the Irish Farmers’ Association, is in Brussels this weekend to meet with farmer leaders from across Europe as they intensify their campaign against the deal.
He stated they would do whatever it takes to halt the agreement with South America.
“This deal requires a simple majority in parliament—50% plus one,” he said.
“We need at least four countries that make up 35% of the European population to stop this agreement.”
“Right now, we can say that the minority is nearly there.”
Government Action
All major Irish political parties have made it clear that they are against the Mercosur deal.
However, on Newstalk Breakfast earlier this week, independent TD Mattie McGrath said there is a need for more government action.
“Why aren’t they putting their money where their mouth is?” he said.
“We talked a lot during the election campaign, but now it’s time to act on this specific deal.”
Mr. Gorman emphasized that this agreement goes against the standards that the EU expects Irish and European farmers to maintain.
