Australia’s agriculture sector is on track for a high-value production year, although drought conditions continue to make life difficult for many farmers and livestock producers.

Despite some areas facing crop failures and dry conditions, the agricultural sector is projected to reach its second-highest production value in 2024-25.

According to the latest forecasts from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES), the total value of agriculture, fisheries, and forestry is expected to reach $94.3 billion in this financial year, as detailed in the Agricultural Commodities and Australian Crop reports.

ABARES Executive Director Jared Greenville stated that the agriculture sector’s value alone is estimated at $88.4 billion, which is $6 billion higher than last year.

Dr. Greenville noted that the main driver of this increase is the high prices for livestock, leading to a rise in livestock production.

“The gross value of crop production is also expected to rise by $2.2 billion, as high domestic production is more competitive than low global market prices,” he stated.

“Favorable growing conditions in key areas of New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia have led to a 16 percent increase in winter crop production, totaling 55.1 million tons.”

However, production levels in South Australia and Victoria have been negatively affected due to poor conditions during the winter crop season, resulting in year-on-year declines in both states.

After three record production years between 2020-21 and 2022-23, the expected drop in agricultural export values to $70.1 billion in 2024-25 reflects a return to more normal levels. This figure would still be the third-highest on record, demonstrating ongoing demand for Australian products despite global instability.

“There is good news for Australian red meat exports, which saw a significant increase in 2023-24, and are expected to reach a new record in 2024-25 due to strong demand from major trading partners like the USA, China, Japan, and the Middle East,” Dr. Greenville added.

“Favorable production conditions in recent years have ensured a continuous supply of livestock in Australia.”

In 2024-25, the export value of red meat is expected to reach record levels, with beef and veal exports valued at $13.9 billion and sheep meat exports at $5.3 billion.

Reports indicate that global economic growth is expected to rise in 2025, supported by increasing disposable income in major economies.

Global GDP growth is projected at 3.2 percent in 2024 and 3.3 percent in 2025, aligning with expectations outlined in the September 2024 agricultural commodities report.

In 2024, inflation is expected to decrease significantly across major economies, reflecting reduced consumer spending on goods and the effects of normalized energy supply chains.

The agricultural commodities report states, “Lower inflation is contributing to real wage growth and an increase in average disposable income in many major economies in 2024.”

“However, the decline in real wage growth from 2021 to 2023 is impacting domestic consumption in several economies.”

“By 2025, further increases in real wages are expected to support growth in domestic consumption in many major economies.”

The report also anticipates interest rate reductions in several key economies in 2025, which could lower financial costs for households and businesses, promoting private investment.

“Major central banks, such as the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve, have recently lowered interest rates after a period of tightening monetary policy from early 2022 to mid-2023,” it noted.

“However, the cumulative effect of this contractionary monetary policy has not yet fully worked its way through the financial system.”

The report indicates that financial markets and central banks expect further interest rate cuts in 2025, which could improve loan affordability, domestic consumption, and business investment.

The risks to the global economic outlook for 2025 are considered relatively balanced.
