In Marstons Mills during early December, observers may have seen an unusual sight at Mystic Lake: a pontoon-style boat slowly moving back and forth, releasing milky clouds into the water.
For those concerned about the lake’s health, this was a welcome sight. The boat, operated by Solitude Lake Management from Shrewsbury, was applying alum to the 152-acre lake to control high phosphorus levels and prevent harmful algae blooms.
The alum treatment is part of a long-awaited plan to fix water quality issues in the lake. For several days, alum was used from five large tanks on the boat, a method that has been around for decades.
Emory Anderson, a retired scientist from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and former president of the Indian Ponds Association, observed the treatment from his home and noted that many neighbors watched too.
He stated, “They were using GPS to work very precisely.”
He mentioned that the treatment targeted the deeper parts of the lake where phosphorus accumulates.
In April, the Barnstable Town Council set aside $195,000 for this work. After initial bid expectations exceeded, the funding was increased by $75,000 in October for the maximum efficient dosage of 50 grams per square meter. It took years for concerned residents to take action regarding the lake’s health.
What happened to Mystic Lake?
Fed by groundwater, Mystic Lake is part of the Indian Pond system – a group of three interconnected ponds forming the headwaters of Marstons Mills River.
When Anderson arrived in the area in 1994, the lake looked pristine.
“We didn’t really see any major issues,” he said. At that time, no one knew that decades of accumulating phosphorus would soon pose significant challenges for the lake’s ecosystem.
Phosphorus, a nutrient found in fertilizers and animal waste and generated from decomposing organic matter, can lead to toxic algae blooms that suffocate aquatic life and pose health risks for people and pets.
A 2004 study funded by the resident-established Indian Ponds Association confirmed that Mystic Lake was suffering from excessive phosphorus.
It’s believed the problem began with phosphorus runoff from the former Hoard Dairy Farm located to the north of the lake. Between 1919 and 1962, the farm’s 150 dairy cows contributed significant amounts of phosphorus to the environment through their waste.
Today the lake continues to struggle with both internal and external sources of phosphorus. While runoff from nearby land and septic systems may contribute to the problem, Anderson explained that “data shows that legacy phosphorus through the ecosystem is the main source of the problem.”
Rising water temperatures have worsened the issue.
Anderson noted that climate change plays a role, and “it’s the warming water that is really causing these cyanobacteria to bloom.”
Estimated 24 Million Mussels Destroyed by Cyanobacteria Blooms
This isn’t the first time the lake has been treated with alum. In 2007-2008, the Barnstable Town Council approved a similar treatment. Concerns about potential losses to the lake’s mussel population led to a permit denial by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program.
One year later, two major cyanobacteria blooms resulted in an estimated 24 million mussels, including rare species, dying. Subsequent surveys indicated that some species faced mortality rates of 94-100%.
As a result of this disaster, the Natural Heritage Program approved a revised alum treatment in 2010 but at a lower dosage of 25 grams per square meter. After the treatment, some improvements were seen in the lake, and a few mussels returned, although populations of key species had significantly declined, and water clarity remained poor. Cyanobacteria blooms continued to be an ongoing issue.
By 2020, regular water testing by the Pond Association and the Cape Cod Pond and Lake Management Project revealed that phosphorus levels were still unacceptably high. The association funded a new study confirming that the lake’s condition had not improved as much as hoped since the 2010 alum treatment.
The Science Behind Alum Treatment in Mystic Lake
Alum treatment involves injecting aluminum sulfate buffered with sodium aluminate into the water. Once it sinks to the bottom, it forms a blanket that chemically binds phosphorus, converting it to a form that cannot contribute to algae growth, Anderson explained. The treatment remains effective for 15 to 20 years.
In Mystic Lake, previous alum applications were insufficient, necessitating the recent re-treatment.
Alum is carefully administered in the deeper areas of the lake and avoids shallow areas where mussels typically reside. The buffering agent helps stabilize pH levels so that fish and other aquatic life are not harmed.
Anderson and others are hopeful about the latest treatment, which has covered more of the lake with a higher alum dosage compared to 2010 — 77 acres this time compared to 58 acres 14 years ago.
He said, “We are confident that this time it will work.” “We are eager to experience and measure improvements.”
Part of the funding includes $12,000 for a new mussel survey in the lake over the next four years to assess treatment success.

He said, “Mystic Lake, like other lakes, is part of the town’s infrastructure. Just as we invest in roads and other public resources, we should also invest in the health of our lakes to ensure these natural resources remain viable for future generations.”
