Kuching (November 26): The Sarawak Department of Agriculture (DoA) will become a facilitator to transform agriculture into a technology-driven and competitive industry over the next 50 years, according to the Prime Minister.
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that this initiative will focus on exporting agricultural products overseas, strengthening the state’s economy through global markets.
Speaking at the DoA Sarawak’s 100th anniversary event, he said, “This will also bring benefits through foreign currency, establishing Sarawak as a leading state with a high-income economy while improving the living standards of Sarawak’s people.”
He emphasized that the state government is committed to supporting the transformation of the agricultural sector in Sarawak, which is positively impacting the income of small farmers, especially in rural areas through commodity crops.
He noted that some smallholders in regions like Gedong can now afford to buy utility vehicles with cash.
“I was surprised to see that they (smallholders) could buy them in cash, even though they are small-scale participants in oil palm cultivation,” he said.
“If they venture into downstream activities, I’m sure their income will increase further.”
Regarding the expansion of the DoA Sarawak workforce, Abang Johari mentioned that this will be a decision by the state secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and DoA Sarawak director Dominic Chunggak, to support the agricultural development agenda.
Food industry, commodity, and regional development minister Datuk Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi highlighted the addition of 262 staff in various grades as requested by DoA Sarawak.
