Dr. Uday Shankar Awasthi, Managing Director, Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), has been given the prestigious Rochdale Pioneers Award 2024. Dr. Awasthi is the second Indian to receive this award after Dr. Verghese Kurien. Dr. Kurien was given this award in the year 2001. The Rochdale Pioneers Award is the highest honor given by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). This award was started in the year 2000. Its purpose is to recognize an individual, or in particular circumstances a co-operative organisation, who has contributed to innovative and financially sustainable co-operative activities that have significantly benefited their members.

IFFCO Limited is hosting the ICA General Assembly and Global Cooperative Conference 2024 in partnership with ICA and Union Ministry of Cooperation. This conference is being organized at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi which will end on November 30, 2024.

Dr. Awasthi said, “IFFCO has supported sustainable agriculture through nano fertilizers like Nano DAP and Nano Urea (Liquid), transforming farming practices and meeting the demand for eco-friendly solutions. Indigenous nano fertilizers tackled logistics issues, reduced India’s fertilizer import dependence and replaced bulky packaging with compact bottles. These innovations have improved soil health, boosted farmer profitability and promoted environmentally responsible farming.” IFFCO’s new indigenous products Nano Urea (Liquid) and Nano DAP (Liquid) are now being used across the country. The farmers are doing happily. It is being widely accepted by farmers in every corner of India and some other countries, especially neighboring countries. Other countries are also contacting IFFCO for supply of nano fertilizers. “In the future, we are planning to export nano fertilizers to 25 more countries.”

IFFCO has achieved remarkable operational success by producing 44 lakh bottles of Nano DAP (Liquid) and selling more than 2.04 crore bottles of Nano Urea (Liquid). It conducted 80,000 field demonstrations, trained more than 80,000 farmers and 1,500 rural entrepreneurs. Total fertilizer production of IFFCO reached 88.95 lakh tonnes, which included 48.85 lakh tonnes of urea and 40.10 lakh tonnes of NPK, DAP, WSF and special fertilizers. Whereas domestic and international sales totaled 112.26 lakh tonnes. This has further increased the use of organic and chemical fertilizers.
