Raleigh – Two turkeys from Sampson County are likely breathing a sigh of relief this morning after receiving a pardon from Governor Roy Cooper on Monday.

Ethel and Bertha, a pair of turkeys from Prestige Farms, were spared from the Thanksgiving table during the North Carolina Turkey Pardon ceremony held at the Executive Mansion. This event has become a Thanksgiving tradition since 2018, when Governor Cooper hosted the first turkey pardon. Although the event continued annually, a virtual pardon was held in 2020 due to COVID concerns. The pardon was paused in 2023 over avian influenza worries, but it returned this year.

Joining Cooper on Monday were Vanna Prestige and Kate Prestige Poplin, representing Prestige Farms and the Prestige family. Summer Lanier and Mary Catherine Braid from the Prestige Turkey Division were also present to care for and present the pardoned turkeys.

Lanier and Braid worked with the turkeys as part of the preparations for the pardon ceremony on Monday.

Other attendees included Bob Ford, executive director of the NC Poultry Federation, Clare Neel, CEO of Manna FoodBank, various representatives from agricultural and commodity groups, state lawmakers, members of Cooper’s staff, and representatives from Manna FoodBank.

As part of the pardon, Prestige Farms has partnered with Manna FoodBank to support those affected by Hurricane Helen in western North Carolina. Manna has received a donation of nearly 27,000 pounds of turkey (about 3,000 whole turkey breasts) to distribute within their 16-county service area. Manna FoodBank also faced challenges due to the hurricane, with their headquarters and warehouse in Asheville being flooded and destroyed. However, they have regrouped and are now operating from a new facility in River Mills.

This year marks the first time Prestige Farms has provided turkeys for the pardon, but they have been involved in helping in other ways in past years. In earlier years, Prestige Farms assisted in distributing 400 turkeys to families in need in Wilson, in collaboration with Butterball and food banks in central and eastern NC.

“On Thanksgiving, we take time to appreciate all that we have and thank those who have helped us. This year, we have seen the strength, resilience, and kindness of our communities as we work to help people in western North Carolina,” Cooper said. “I’m grateful to all who have supported western North Carolina, including the generous donations from Prestige Farms and Manna FoodBank.”

Scott Prestige, vice president of the turkey division at Prestige Farms, emphasized that farmers are in the business of feeding the world. He noted that supporting neighbors in times of need is something Prestige strongly believes in.

“North Carolina has a strong and productive agricultural community that feeds people here and beyond,” Prestige stated. “We are proud to be a part of that community, and today we are thankful for this special opportunity to partner with Manna FoodBank and their strong network to provide turkey products to support our neighbors in western North Carolina.”

Neel expressed gratitude to Cooper, the Prestige family, and Prestige Farms for their willingness to help those in great need.

Neel emphasized, “We are very grateful to Governor Cooper, his staff, and Prestige Farms for their incredible generosity in making this gift possible for our neighbors in western North Carolina. As we continue to recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helen, this donation of turkey breasts will ensure that thousands of families in the 16 counties we serve will be able to share holiday meals with their loved ones. Everyone deserves not just essential food and resources, but the opportunity to experience the joy and togetherness of the holiday season. Because of this partnership, we can provide comfort and nourishment to our neighbors when they need it most.”

Ethel and Bertha are 23-week-old turkeys weighing 26 and 28 pounds respectively. After the ceremony, they were moved to Naylor Family Farm in Fuquay-Varina, where they will now spend their retirement.

While this is the first time Prestige Farms provided turkeys for the pardon, it is not the first instance Sampson County has been involved in the ceremony. Butterball and its producers provided pardoned birds from 2018 to 2022, with some coming from farms in Sampson County, including Pine Ridge Farm in 2018, Valley Jackson’s Toy Farm in 2019, and Warren Farm in 2022.

Bob Ford, executive director of the NC Poultry Federation, highlighted that turkeys are a significant part of the state’s economy.

“North Carolina is ranked second in turkey production. It is an integral part of the state’s economy, employing approximately 11,000 people and creating an additional 26,000 jobs in supporting industries,” Ford explained.

“Thanksgiving is a special time of year when we give thanks and celebrate the abundance of all agricultural products in North Carolina. We would like to especially thank Governor Cooper for his support of this year’s official NC Thanksgiving turkey and the official pardon.”
