The Iowa State University Research Park partnered with Alliant Energy to establish a Digital Agriculture Innovation Lab, which was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday.

Rick Sanders, the director of the ISU Research Park, expressed pride in the project, stating, “We are very proud of how this has come together and we are excited about its impact and how it will be used on a daily basis.”

The center provides over 85,000 square feet of space for digital agriculture innovation teams and agriculture-focused businesses to utilize technology and research resources.

During the ribbon-cutting event, Sanders emphasized the significance of the occasion.

“Today, we are not only opening a state-of-the-art facility, but we are also celebrating our collective commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainability, as well as the incredible progress being made in agricultural technology in Iowa,” said Sanders.

He then introduced Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig.

Wintersteen highlighted the 60-year partnership between Iowa State and Alliant Energy, along with their ongoing collaboration on research projects and other initiatives.

In 2023, Iowa State dedicated an Alliant Energy solar farm located to the south and west of the university. This solar farm serves as a living laboratory to study soil, water, plants, and animals, integrated with agricultural practices. ISU has also partnered with Alliant Energy to establish a Digital Manufacturing Lab, which currently involves over 500 companies.

Wintersteen noted, “These investments not only provide research, innovation, and economic development but also valuable opportunities for our students and faculty.”

Alliant Energy’s President, Myriam Farlinger, also discussed the partnership.

Matt Darr, Director of the Digital Ag Innovation Lab, discussed the mission of the lab.

According to Darr, the new lab includes designated meeting spaces that allow students to engage in hands-on experiences, helping them educate farmers on implementing technology that enhances real agricultural value.

The lab focuses on developing technologies and products aimed at making agriculture more productive, efficient, and profitable, including:

• Precision agriculture
• Machinery electronics and CAN bus technology
• Biomass logistics

Ben Covington, a testing engineer at Iowa State University, described his role in the Digital Agriculture Innovation Lab.

Covington said, “Being located here in Ames, Iowa, we are at the heart of precision ag technology. Many of the early yield monitoring tools used in combines were developed right here. My team has been able to help fine-tune some of these tools, and we have begun to integrate them into other platforms like those used for sugarcane and forage harvesting, as well as our hand-held forage tools.”

Teresa Middleton, lead of the Digital Agronomy team, remarked, “It has taken a lot of time to get here. It’s really satisfying to see it all come together and that support for our ag industry partners within Iowa is growing.”
