The country’s leading fertilizer manufacturing company NFL on Saturday asked farmers not to pay heed to rumors of fertilizer shortage and advised them not to hoard nutrients. The company said that there is sufficient stock of urea required for the current Rabi sowing season in Punjab. NFL said in a statement that out of the total requirement of urea in Punjab for the Rabi season, fertilizer companies are regularly supplying it in the state.
Markfed and private companies are selling
NFL said that based on the ratio of total requirement, adequate quantity has been supplied to Punjab from October 1. This quantity is more than one lakh tonnes compared to the proportionate requirement of urea. The company said that fertilizer companies are supplying 60 percent urea in Punjab through Markfed and 40 percent through private dealers.
Urea production increased to 314 lakh tonnes
According to the company, urea production has increased from 225 lakh tonnes per year during 2014-15 to a record 314.07 lakh tonnes during 2023-24. Urea is made available to farmers at the statutorily notified maximum retail price (MRP). The difference between urea MRP and production cost is being passed on to the manufacturers. A bag of urea (45 kg) is sold for around Rs 250. Nowhere is a higher price being charged from the farmer. If such a case is found, action will be taken as per rules.
