The Coimbatore Tea Auction Center has emerged as one of India’s key tea auction hubs, recently starting to manage around 20 million kilograms of bulk tea after a 12-year gap.
According to Deepak Shah, the president of the Coimbatore Tea Trade Association, the center was launched in 1982 with an initial volume of 13.9 million kilograms.
During the 42nd annual general meeting, Shah reported that the export of South Indian tea rose from 83 million kilograms to 102 million kilograms, an increase of 19 million kilograms. In contrast, the export from North India saw a modest rise of 4 million kilograms, going from 145 million kilograms to 149 million kilograms. He praised exporters for achieving this growth despite challenging global conditions.
Establishment of a Tea Park
Shah also requested help from the urban land tax department to secure a lease from the Tea Board for the establishment of a tea park, which has received in-principle approval for partnership with DP World.
