The work completed by this group was part of a drain matching program that Miller started in 2017, which has been growing ever since. Maintaining ditches generally involves clearing out log jams and other obstructions, removing overgrown vegetation that blocks flow, getting rid of excessive sediment, regrading edges where necessary, and spreading topsoil, grass seed, and straw mulch blankets.
The main goal is to improve stormwater runoff and melting snow in the ditches, which are maintained under the jurisdiction of the Macomb County Road Department.
“We’ve done a lot of work in agriculture over the summer. It’s had a big impact on farmers,” Miller said.
“But we still have a lot to do,” she added, smiling while looking at the jack-o’-lantern.
The award-winning pumpkin came from a farm owned by George VanHoute, where it was grown by Tracy Smith and Brenda Vanthom while still on the vine. Leaving it on the vine helps preserve its design.
