The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining will launch a crop restoration and expansion program for coffee and cocoa farmers.
During the International Coffee and National Cocoa Day celebration at Emancipation Park in St. Andrew on October 1, Portfolio Minister Hon. Floyd Green provided updates on the program.
“This means we will work with our farmers on innovations. We have identified the need to encourage more farmers to plant inter-crops and focus on agroforestry, along with other short-term cash crops that can increase their income alongside coffee and cocoa,” he stated.
He mentioned that seeds and other inputs will be provided to support this initiative, which will boost farmers’ income.
Mr. Green also indicated that more training will be conducted with stakeholders in the sector due to the changing environment.
“We need to change how we plant and the practices we use. Therefore, we will focus on training our cocoa and coffee farmers on best practices, pest management, and climate adaptation strategies through JACRA (Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority) and RADA (Rural Agricultural Development Authority),” he explained.
The minister stated that the government will offer more direct support to farmers. “We will provide you with more fertilizers and chemicals. We will look at using technology to address some of your labor issues. Agriculture is a science; it’s not guesswork. We will work with you to tackle these challenges,” he added.
Mr. Green also noted that there will be an initiative through JACRA to provide land security for farmers in the sectors.
“We will run a campaign through JACRA to help more cocoa and coffee farmers obtain tenure, leases, and land security documents, especially if you are working on government land. This is something we have discussed for a long time; we need to address it now,” he said.
He urged cocoa and coffee farmers to get involved in more value-added offerings, saying, “This way we can ensure we retain more money.”
Moreover, the minister mentioned that technology would be utilized to advance the agricultural sector.
“We have already entered a partnership to use blockchain technologies to trace the journey of coffee from the farm to the consumer. This will allow you to scan a code from anywhere in the world and verify that it is authentic Blue Mountain Coffee, while also enabling us to tell the story of our coffee and cocoa,” Mr. Green explained.
“We will continue to build this. It is vital as we work to ensure compliance with new EU regulations that mandate sustainable practices in coffee cultivation, and to do this effectively, we need to track how coffee and all other commodities are produced,” he added.
Through this partnership, JACRA and Verified and True will, among other things, launch a verified platform to protect and promote agricultural products like cocoa and coffee through end-to-end traceability.
Highlighting the partnership, Chris Record, Chief Technology Officer of Verified and True, stated that technology will enable consumers to verify the authenticity of any product.
He said, “A future where consumers can instantly verify the origin of the products they purchase ensures they are buying authentic, high-quality Jamaican coffee and cocoa.”
Meanwhile, regarding pricing issues, Minister Green noted that steps are being taken to ensure fair market prices for crops.
“Without farmers, we have no industry. If farmers feel they are not getting a fair price for their coffee or cocoa, they will exit the industry. If they leave, we will have nothing to celebrate, so we must ensure fairness in everything we do. Our coffee and cocoa farmers must receive a fair price for their products. If they cannot make a living or take care of their families, they will leave the sector,” he emphasized.
“I have already told JACRA that we need to begin the process of determining what constitutes a fair price, and we will first employ moral pressure by stating that we consider it to be a fair price, and we hope to come to that outcome. But if that does not work, we will have to escalate it, starting there,” Mr. Green said.
He reaffirmed that the government will continue to support farmers to ensure development in the sectors.
