The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is hosting the 18th edition of its major agricultural event, the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA), from October 7-11 in Kingstown at the University of the West Indies Open Campus.

This year’s theme, “Climate-Smart Agriculture for a Sustainable Future,” aligns with the 25 by 2025 initiative aimed at reducing the region’s food import bill by 25% by 2025 and making food systems more resilient, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture.

The five-day event will feature workshops and seminars coordinated by partners in regional agriculture. Participants will gain insights and share best practices on securing agriculture in a changing climate, climate-smart fishing with a focus on sargassum, the role of youth as champions of regional food systems, food security and nutrition, pathways for women farmers after Hurricane Beril, digital agriculture in the Caribbean, and human resource development in the region.

Commenting on the CWA, CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett stated, “In line with CARICOM’s 25 by 2025 initiative goals, CWA 2024 takes a practical approach focusing on crucial climate change issues important for securing and enhancing food. The seminars will concentrate on actions, solutions, and innovative technologies to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of agricultural food systems against extreme weather events.”

This year’s CWA aims to coordinate efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change on food production systems and promote investments in climate-smart actions. The event will serve as a platform to engage key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors, fostering essential partnerships for sustainable agricultural development.

“CWA is a true testament to the commitment and value the region places on food and nutrition security. The region is vibrant and ready to play its role in securing its future and achieving zero hunger,” said Shawn Bough, Programme Manager for Agriculture and Agro-Industrial Development at the CARICOM Secretariat.

During this week, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) will launch a comprehensive climate change action project (CACCI) and the Agriculture Alliance of the Caribbean (AACARI) will introduce the Caribbean Planting Initiative.

A non-profit organization based in Saint Lucia, Helen Daughters, which works to empower rural women, will also launch a documentary titled “Roots of Resilience: Stories of Caribbean Women in Agriculture.”

A key highlight of this major event will be a trade show and expo promoting agricultural businesses, knowledge sharing, and exploring modern technologies in the field, which will be held at the Kingstown Cruise Ship Terminal. High-level ministerial and board meetings of regional institutions and a special meeting of the Trade and Economic Development Council on Agriculture will also be convened during the five days. The concept of Caribbean Week of Agriculture was developed by IICA to place agriculture and rural life at the forefront of regional integration activities and to empower decision-makers in this area, recognizing the importance of agriculture and rural life to the region’s economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

The CWA is organized under the auspices of the Alliance for Sustainable Development of Agriculture and the Rural Milieu (the Alliance).
