पीपुल्स फ़ार्म और यूनिवर्सिटी हाउसिंग ने अपने शहरी फ़ार्म को प्रदर्शित करने के लिए ईगल हाइट्स कम्युनिटी गार्डन में एक खुले घर की मेजबानी की।

यूनिवर्सिटी हाउसिंग फार्म मैनेजर मलाची पर्सचे ने द डेली कार्डिनल को बताया कि ईगल हाइट्स गार्डन के बाहर कैंपस डाइनिंग हॉल के लिए पतझड़ के मौसम के दौरान यूनिवर्सिटी हाउसिंग हर हफ्ते 100 पाउंड उपज उगाती है।

पर्सचे ने कहा कि फार्म स्थानीय खाद्य अपशिष्ट को खाद बनाता है, जिसमें बैरिकेस कॉफी और स्टारबक्स के अतिरिक्त कॉफी ग्राउंड भी शामिल हैं। पर्सचे को कंपोस्टिंग का विस्तार करने की उम्मीद है लेकिन पास के नगरपालिका कुएं के कारण प्राकृतिक संसाधन विभाग के नियमों के साथ बाधाओं का सामना करना पड़ा है।

पर्शे ने कहा, स्वस्थ फार्म को बनाए रखने की कुंजी में से एक स्वयंसेवकों की मदद है। यह फ़ार्म ग्रीनहाउस लर्निंग समुदाय के सदस्यों के साथ मिलकर घास काटने और फसल खींचने का काम करता है।

पर्शे ने कहा कि कॉलेज के छात्रों के साथ काम करने में ख़ुशी का माहौल था।

“हम यहां हमेशा अतिरिक्त हाथों का उपयोग कर सकते हैं,” पर्शे ने कहा।

यूनिवर्सिटी हाउसिंग प्लॉट के ठीक बगल में द पीपल्स फ़ार्म है। जबकि पर्श ने कहा कि पीपुल्स फ़ार्म और यूनिवर्सिटी हाउसिंग अभी तक एक साथ काम नहीं कर रहे हैं, उन्होंने फ़ार्म टूर को एक साथ आयोजित करने का निर्णय लिया ताकि “लोगों को पता चले कि फ़ार्म यहाँ है।”

पीपुल्स फ़ार्म के शहरी कृषि निदेशक जोसी माह्स इस बात से सहमत थे कि पर्याप्त स्वयंसेवकों को ढूंढना मुश्किल था।

माह्स ने कहा, “हमारे पास बहुत सारी ज़मीन और पर्याप्त मात्रा में पैसा है, लेकिन अपने नाखूनों के नीचे गंदगी जमा करने में बिल्कुल भी दिलचस्पी नहीं है।”

पीपल्स फ़ार्म रविवार सुबह 10 बजे से दोपहर तक ईगल हाइट्स गार्डन में साप्ताहिक स्वयंसेवक घंटे आयोजित करता है और उसी दिन दोपहर में ईस्ट कैंपस मॉल में फ़ार्म से मुफ़्त उपज वितरित करता है।

माह्स को उम्मीद है कि ओपन हाउस कार्यक्रम के दौरान फार्म का प्रदर्शन करने से, अधिक लोग “किसी ऐसी चीज़ पर ध्यान केंद्रित करने में शामिल होंगे जो आपसे भी बड़ी है।”

People’s Farm and University Housing hosted an open house at the Eagle Heights Community Garden to showcase their urban farm.

Malachi Persche, the farm manager for University Housing, told The Daily Cardinal that during the fall season, they grow 100 pounds of produce each week for the campus dining hall from the Eagle Heights Garden.

Persche explained that the farm composts local food waste, including coffee grounds from Barricades Coffee and Starbucks. He hopes to expand composting efforts, but he has faced challenges due to regulations from the Department of Natural Resources because of a nearby municipal well.

“I would love to be able to bring back a lot of leftover food from the dining hall or turn part of the existing composting stream into something more focused here,” Persche said.

He mentioned that one of the keys to maintaining a healthy farm is the help of volunteers. The farm collaborates with members of the greenhouse learning community for tasks like mowing and harvesting crops.

Persche expressed that working with college students creates a positive atmosphere.

“We can always use extra hands here,” he said.

Next to University Housing’s plot is People’s Farm. Persche noted that while People’s Farm and University Housing haven’t partnered yet, they decided to organize the farm tour together so that “people know the farm is here.”

Josie Mahs, the urban agriculture director at People’s Farm, agreed that finding adequate volunteers can be challenging.

People’s Farm runs weekly volunteer hours every Sunday from 10 AM to 12 PM at Eagle Heights Garden, and later that day, they distribute free produce from the farm at East Campus Mall.

Mahs hopes to attract more people to focus on something greater than themselves through the open house event.

“We’ve become so distant from our food, and while doing this, you realize how much work and love goes into growing just one tomato. It involves planting, transplanting, and watering during hot days when you don’t want to be outside. We also have to weed every day because they just keep coming back. Then you can enjoy that tomato,” said Mahs. “I think there’s something to be said for working hard for your food; it just tastes better.”
