China to Impose Tariffs on Agricultural Imports from Taiwan

Chinese state media reported on Wednesday that China will start imposing tariffs on agricultural imports from Taiwan in response to similar actions by Taiwan’s government.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, starting September 25, 34 Taiwanese agricultural products, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood, will be subject to customs duties.
CCTV stated, “The unilateral restrictions imposed by Taiwan on exports of mainland (Chinese) products have seriously disrupted economic and trade cooperation across the Taiwan Strait.”
State news agency Xinhua noted that in light of this, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council recently issued a notice halting the tariff exemption policy for 34 Taiwanese agricultural products.
The report did not provide details on the levels of the tariffs.
China claims self-governing Taiwan as part of its territory and has intensified military, political, and economic pressure on the island in recent years.
Taiwan’s tropical fruits are highly valued in China, serving as a major market for Taiwanese producers.
