This year, foreign investment pledges have already increased, especially in the areas of data centers and printed circuit board manufacturing. Official data indicates that investment pledges in the first nine months of 2024 rose by 42% year-on-year to 722.5 billion baht ($21.6 billion).
Pichai mentioned that new investment proposals, including from domestic firms, could reach up to 1 trillion baht this year.
Trade Agreements
Pichai stated that Thailand aims to sign free trade agreements with the European Union and the United Arab Emirates next year. He mentioned that preparations are being made to sign an agreement with the European Free Trade Association during the World Economic Forum in January, which would help accelerate the agreement with the European Union.
Negotiations with the EU resumed last year after stopping due to the military coup in 2014. In August, the Thai parliament approved a plan to enhance Bangkok’s relations with the EU.
Pichai noted that Phaetongthan’s administration is emphasizing a food security agreement with the UAE, under which Thailand will export more frozen chicken, rice, and prepared food products. Thailand is a major producer and exporter of sugar, poultry, and rice. The country earns over $30 billion annually from shipping agricultural goods and food products.
Pichai stated that the export data for September, expected next week, is projected to show growth for the third consecutive month, and despite a strong base from last year, it is likely to fall short of the government’s export growth target of 1-2% for the entire year.
