Bob Johnston will tell you that dewatering is not a new concept, but he notes that new requests come in every day. “I just returned from a business trip where I took fourteen flights in two weeks. This year, I visited a company in Malaysia that has started drying waste fiberglass, a company in the Caribbean that is extracting liquids from sargassum seaweed, and seven processing plants in Vietnam dealing with coffee grounds, among others. The list goes on.” He chuckles, “If you had asked me a few years ago, it would have been about marijuana since that was a hot market then.”

Dairy Feed to Orange Peels

Johnston explains that over two hundred dewatering units are needed for this recent application, all equipped with gearboxes from NORD Drivesystems, with whom he has worked closely for the past 17 years. This is because Johnston is the Engineering Manager at Vincent Corporation in Tampa, Florida, a company synonymous with the dewatering screw press, which was patented by founder Dan Vincent in 1961. Although their efforts began three decades ago with a different product, Johnston says, “Back then, he used to visit juice canneries, collect piles of orange peels, dry them, and use the dry peels as cattle feed.” However, Vincent faced a problem: flies were attracted to the peels before they dried. That’s when he noticed that sprinkling hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) on the piles of canned orange peels would cause water to start flowing down. He quickly moved to patent the chemical reaction, later applying his idea to squeezing the peels, which would soon become known throughout the industry as a dewatering screw press. “The reaction breaks the cell walls, allowing the press to extract a lot more liquid. Since then, we’ve developed many improvements, including using steam or enzymes to enhance the dewatering process, all focused around the screw press.”

Thousands of Presses Later

Today, Vincent Corp employs 60 people in its 30,000 square foot facility, where it produces four standard product lines—the original VP series screw press introduced in 1952, as well as the new CP series, KP series, and twin-screw TSP series. There are also shredding units available that sit at the press inlet to help break down materials, along with various types of screens, filters, lime dosers, so-called “declumpers,” and many other accessories. The company also designs specialized units to meet unique customer requirements and rents out dewatering systems for temporary needs. Johnston says, “We have a fleet of over 200 rental machines that come and go, allowing customers to test a dewatering system before purchasing it.”

Whether purchased or rented, every dewatering press features a graduated pitch screw with a diameter ranging from 4″ to 30″. It’s powered by an electric gear motor from NORD, which rotates the screw inside a cylindrical chamber with a perforated screen. Raw materials enter the equipment from one end, and as they move down the screw, they are gradually compressed, expelling “press liquor.” An adjustable discharge cone assembly controls the resistance applied during the process, ultimately leading to the release of the dry “press cake.”

Significant Forces

While materials may be soft and pliable, significant forces are involved. Johnston noted that he and his design team went through several gear drive suppliers before finding NORD. “Some of our early units utilized a shrink disk to connect the screw. They didn’t work well. We had to look inside the screw, splitting it apart to analyze the issue. We then switched to a taper grip design, which had the same problem, not to mention the heavy warranty expenses we incurred. After switching to NORD’s Maxdrive parallel shaft gearboxes and Unicase parallel shaft gear units, all those issues disappeared.

Johnston immediately indicated that dewatering materials isn’t as straightforward as processing orange peels and celery stalks. Take marijuana, for instance. Here, the “weed” must be soaked in alcohol for one or two hours (for CBD oil extraction) before being fed into the press. The manufacturer then evaporates the alcohol for reuse, converting the remaining raw oil into cannabis products while selling the pressed cakes to pig farms. A similar scenario revolves around blueberries, where the alcohol is “very valuable,” and the waste skin is turned into cattle feed. Johnston adds, “We always split the flow to distribute both pressed liquor and pressed cakes.”

Still Being Distributed

Johnston recalls a visit from NORD sales representative Ricky Negron shortly after starting with NORD. When confronted about a catalog photo showcasing heavy-duty bearing options, Negron admitted he didn’t know. Yet the enthusiastic salesman soon returned with a clear explanation, and Vincent Corp has been specifying that option ever since. “This gear drive unit not only supports the high axial thrust loads we encounter in dewatering applications, but it also allows us to increase motor speeds beyond what any other unit we’ve tried would enable. It gives us the flexibility to enhance capacity without the hassle of specifying a different drive or experimenting with various settings to optimize output or adjusting for particular issues. I’ve also found that NORD units are quite compact, which is beneficial in unusual situations where space is limited. Ultimately, there’s the durability factor. As I mentioned earlier, we sell dewatering systems worldwide, often in places where service is minimal, and with all the years we’ve been using them, I honestly cannot think of a single instance of failure with NORD gear drives.”
