Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan emphasized the importance of utilizing unused land for agriculture to ensure food security in her country during her speech on Thursday.
While addressing representatives at an Africa agricultural dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa, she stated that a priority in Tanzania’s annual budget is to increase agricultural allocations to support farmers in producing food and cash crops.
She argued that this would enhance production for local consumption and export markets within the East and Southern Africa region.
“We are not there yet, but I assure you we are on the right path,” she said, reflecting on her experiences visiting Tanzania’s major agricultural areas and the lessons learned from the Feed Africa Dakar 2 summit held in January of the previous year.
She announced that the Tanzanian government has increased its agricultural development budget from Tsh940 billion ($345 million) in 2023 to Tsh1.2 trillion ($441 million) for this year, which is a 23.7% increase.
