Efforts are underway to prevent an unwanted pest from invading Orange County. The county is working with the California Department of Food and Agriculture to target the oriental fruit fly.
“They are not native to California, and if we allow them to establish themselves here, they could be harmful,” said Orange County Agricultural Commissioner Jose Ariaga.
In October, eight oriental fruit flies were identified by detection teams in Garden Grove and Santa Ana. This fly has no natural enemies and can destroy fruits and vegetables.
“They can lay eggs on more than 230 different agricultural items, including residential fruits like citrus, oranges, apples, avocados, which could become infested with larvae, making them inedible,” Ariaga explained.
The search for the oriental fruit flies has led to a quarantine that spans 88 square miles in the area where they were found. This quarantine is in place to limit the movement of any agricultural products.
Ariaga mentioned, “The quarantine requirements are intended to restrict the movement of agricultural items to prevent or control the movement of these flies.”
He warned that without this response, the flies could jeopardize residents’ ability to grow fruits and vegetables in their own yards.
Traps have been set up in the quarantine zone.
Ariaga stated, “If there are flies, bait stations will attract them and help eliminate them.”
However, residents are encouraged to do their part.
Ariaga urged residents, “We ask them not to take any untreated fruits or vegetables away. They are safe to consume at home. Go ahead and eat them, but please do not take them to your neighbors, as you might be spreading any larvae that could be present and extending the quarantine.”
Since November 1, no flies have been found.
The quarantine in the affected area is expected to last until June 2025, but it may expand to other areas if more oriental fruit flies are discovered.
