New Delhi (Reuters) – Authorities have reported that a toxic haze has settled over North India on Thursday, making it difficult to see in many areas due to high pollution levels caused by humidity, low wind speed, and a drop in temperature.
Lahore, a city in neighboring Pakistan, has become the world’s most polluted city during this annual winter crisis in the region, worsened by dust, emissions, and smoke from illegal burning in the agricultural states of Punjab and Haryana in India.
However, operations at New Delhi’s international airport were not affected by the haze, and weather officials are hopeful that the winds during the day will clear it up.
The airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), reported visibility at 300 meters (980 feet), although some airlines warned that flights might be affected.
IndiGo posted a message on X stating, “Winter fog may affect flights” in Delhi, Amritsar city in Punjab, where officials reported zero visibility, and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
New Delhi’s international airport diverted some flights on Wednesday.
Weather officials noted that the minimum temperature in Delhi dropped to 16.1 degrees Celsius (61 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday, down from 17 degrees Celsius the previous day.
Pollution levels have been categorized as ‘severe’ for the second consecutive day, with an Air Quality Index score of 430, where a score of 0 to 50 is considered ‘good.’
The Ministry of Earth Sciences indicated that pollution in New Delhi is likely to remain in the ‘severe’ category on Friday, potentially worsening to ‘very bad,’ or with an index score between 300 and 400.
The ministry’s website revealed that the number of fires set in fields to clear rice residue for wheat planting in North India has risen significantly this week, increasing from around 1,200 on Monday to nearly 2,300 on Wednesday.
In Pakistan, Lahore, the capital of Punjab’s eastern province, was ranked the most polluted city in the world by Swiss group IQAir on Thursday. City officials have been struggling against the dangerous air quality this month.
To tackle the issue, the province has already closed schools, halted some construction work, restricted most outdoor activities, and ordered some businesses to close early.
