Muscat: A collaborative meeting is taking place in Oman between US dairy export experts led by the US Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and Omani specialists, as the annual multinational government seminar for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region began in Muscat on Wednesday.
This seminar, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources (MOAFWR), aims to strengthen relationships and facilitate open discussions on food security, standards, and market access by bringing together officials from various MENA countries. The event will last for three days.
Speaking with The Observer, Jonathan Gardner, Senior Vice President of Market Access and Regulatory Affairs at USDEC, mentioned that the objective of the seminar is to build partnerships, cooperate with companies in the MENA region, and provide insights into the American regulatory system for dairy producers.
“There is a free trade agreement (FTA) between Oman and the US. Oman is hosting this event, and we appreciate this initiative. We are exploring how US agricultural regulatory authorities can help improve Oman’s agricultural system, including support for both small and large farmers in dairy production regarding safety and health,” he said.
This event, held in conjunction with the centennial celebration of US dairy regulatory authorities, brings together various stakeholders, including officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), animal health inspection officers, and exporters, covering topics from animal health to food safety.
By engaging with key decision-makers across the region, the seminar aims to improve market access, address challenges, and eliminate regulatory barriers to ensure smooth trade flows for US agricultural products.
“We represent both sides of the dairy industry, and our goal is to promote US dairy products globally. Through our presence in Oman, we work to enhance understanding of safety and regulatory systems in the GCC and other regional countries. We have a long history, and through this seminar, we aim to share our expertise,” he added.
The seminar also focuses on promoting US food safety standards, educating MENA officials about US food safety and quality, encouraging the adoption of international best practices, and proactively addressing potential regulatory changes.
