Manila – Due to recent outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in both countries, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has imposed a temporary import ban on domestic and wild birds, as well as other poultry products from Japan and Austria.
In a press release on Thursday, DA announced that Secretary Francisco T. Laurel Jr. signed separate memoranda on Tuesday to suspend imports from both countries to protect the local poultry industry from potential animal and public health threats.
The ban applies not only to domestic and wild birds but also to poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs, and semen for artificial insemination of chickens.
The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has also been instructed to stop issuing clearance and phytosanitary import approvals until further notice.
Laurel stated, “The poultry industry is a major source of investment and job creation and is a critical component in ensuring food security for the country.”
“It is our duty to ensure that the local poultry population is not exposed to highly infectious diseases.”
The Deputy Chairman of the Regional Commission in Austria reported the H5N1 bird flu strain to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) from Matighofen in Braunau am Inn.
