Amidst the uproar over the slow pace of paddy procurement in Punjab, the central government has claimed that the target of purchasing 185 lakh metric tons (LMT) of paddy in the state will be achieved by November 30, 2024. So far, 10 lakh farmers in Punjab have registered to sell paddy at MSP for the Kharif marketing season 2024-25. There, 67 lakh metric tonnes of paddy has been purchased till October 29, 2024, which is 80 percent of the 84 lakh LMT purchased on the same date last year. Paddy procurement in Punjab had started on time on October 1, 2024, but due to heavy rains in September and the resulting high moisture content in paddy, harvesting and procurement was delayed.

On an average, about 4 LMT paddy is being lifted every day from the markets of Punjab. The ministry estimates that the target of purchasing the remaining 118 LMT paddy will be easily achieved by November 30, 2024.
