Swiss-based agricultural and food producer Jungbunzlauer has announced that it will spend $200 million to expand its operations in Port Colborne, Ontario. This expansion is expected to create 300 construction jobs and 50 full-time manufacturing jobs.
The investment announcement was made by Jungbunzlauer’s CEO Bruno Tremblay at the company’s existing facilities in Port Colborne, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford present. The new facilities will receive $4.8 million in support from the Invest Ontario Fund.
This commitment comes five months after the Japanese firm Asahi Kasei announced it would invest $1.56 billion to build an integrated lithium-ion battery separator plant in Port Colborne.
The new facility will produce xanthan gum, a thickening agent used in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
Jungbunzlauer will enhance its capability to supply xanthan gum to customers across North America.
Tremblay stated, “We have been proud members of the Port Colborne community for over 20 years.” He added that during this time, they have invested $560 million to expand capacity and improve sustainability at their local facility. Looking ahead to the next 10 years, they plan to continue significant investments in capacity, sustainability, and the community.
The current 50,000 square-foot facility uses natural fermentation processes to produce citric acid and specialty salts.

Tremblay noted that Jungbunzlauer continues to invest in Port Colborne and Ontario due to access to locally grown corn, which is an essential component of its products, along with ample water and green energy supply in Ontario.
He mentioned that the xanthan gum produced at the new Port Colborne plant will be of high quality, potentially approaching pharmaceutical-grade, indicating that specific investments will be necessary to ensure top-quality gum is produced there.
Tremblay stated that this new commitment represents the first phase of investments that could make their bio-fermented ingredients potentially number one in North America.
Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Vic Fedeli, responded to a question regarding how the investment would change lives in the region.
“With construction underway, we recently visited the Asahi Kasei plant and showcased it in videos showing thousands of men and women working there for years to come, which will change lives across Ontario and here,” Fedeli remarked.
Commercial production at the Asahi Kasei plant is expected to start in 2027, while the first phase of the Jungbunzlauer plant expansion is anticipated to begin in spring 2026.
Tremblay added that the company has made significant investments over the past five years to decarbonize its footprint, including a commitment that any new product will be carbon neutral.
He mentioned the company intends to install heat pumps and hot water recycling equipment at the Port Colborne facilities, along with a comprehensive electrification plan for future site development.
“Electrification is vital for us to decarbonize our footprint in Port Colborne, so I’m here seeking support from all officials to ensure we have enough green energy to back our decarbonization efforts,” Tremblay said.
The plant will utilize natural fermentation technologies to further minimize its environmental impact. The site will implement electric vaporization and hot water recovery systems with heat pumps to reuse energy and reduce overall natural gas consumption.
Premier Ford commented, “They are choosing Ontario due to our competitive business environment, as our government has worked to cut red tape by over a billion dollars, reduce electricity costs by 15 to 17 percent, and keep taxes low.”
