Patna: On Tuesday, the state’s Agriculture Minister, Mangal Pandey, reported that this year’s floods have devastated 224,000 hectares of agricultural land across 673 villages in 92 blocks across 19 districts.
The floods in September particularly affected farmers in 16 districts located in the floodplains of the Gandak, Koshi, and Ganga rivers, causing significant destruction, soil erosion, and damage to homes, roads, and standing crops. Recently, the water levels of the Gandak River rose after the ring embankment was damaged near the village of Bariya in West Champaran district, while the levels of major rivers like Ganga, Bagmati, Koshi, and Mahananda have started to decrease.
Pandey stated, “It’s estimated that crop damage on 91,817 hectares of agricultural land exceeds 33%. The government will provide all possible assistance to farmers.” He reviewed the extent of damage with Secretary of the Agriculture Department Sanjay Kumar Agrawal and other senior officials. He also instructed district and block agricultural officials to coordinate and complete assessments of crop damage within a week, with reports sent to the state headquarters for evaluation.
