Rome – Today, at a historic venue in the Quirinal Palace, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, alongside Italian President Sergio Mattarella, announced the establishment of the FAO Food and Agriculture Museum and Network in Rome. They also unveiled the official logo for the museum, which will be inaugurated next year as part of the FAO’s 80th anniversary, symbolizing a new chapter in the long-term partnership between FAO and Italy.

“The museum will serve as a bridge between food technologies and the cultures embedded in our rich history, as well as our traditional and indigenous heritage,” Qu explained.

“The FAO’s 80th anniversary acts as a moment of renewed global commitment to achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda Goal 2, which is summarized in the vision of ‘zero hunger’ that has yet to be realized. For this reason, the museum initiative is very important,” President Mattarella stated.

This event marked the first arrival of an audience at the Presidential Palace for FAO, with approximately 60 FAO staff in attendance. During the gathering, the Director-General also presented details about the upcoming World Food Forum 2024, which will start next week at the FAO headquarters, along with activities for World Food Day celebrated on October 16.

This year’s theme for the international day is “The Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future“, serving as a timely reminder that everyone has the right to adequate food, and it calls for a renewed commitment from the global community to build more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agricultural food systems that can nourish the world.

“Our organization’s motto – fiat panis – ‘let there be bread’ – is not just a slogan. It is our responsibility to ensure that everyone everywhere has access to healthy food,” Qu stated.

Food and Agriculture Museum and Network

The new FAO Museum, set to open on World Food Day, October 16, 2025, will function as a permanent exhibition and educational space open to the public. Dedicated to food and agriculture, the museum will explore the FAO’s mandate in an interactive, digital environment, promoting knowledge-sharing, innovation, and celebrating global culinary traditions.

Supported by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of International Cooperation, the museum is designed to be a hub for both in-person and online engagement for students, families, and international visitors. Its mission is to highlight the rich traditions and innovative approaches that have shaped agricultural food systems worldwide. The FAO Museum and Network will also provide a unique opportunity for the global community to connect with the rich cultural and scientific heritage of food and agriculture, helping to educate and inspire future generations.

The Director-General emphasized that the museum and network will offer FAO members a platform to showcase their local food cultures and products, strengthening the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The museum will promote FAO’s “Four Betters” – better production, better nutrition, better environment, and better life – highlighting how agricultural food systems can support sustainable development and address hunger worldwide.

A Longstanding Partnership

Qu expressed deep appreciation for the long-term partnership between FAO and Italy, noting the critical role played by the host nation.

He praised Italy’s leadership in international food security initiatives, especially during the G20 presidency in 2021, and expressed gratitude saying, “We appreciate the continuous support and warm hospitality of the Italian government, institutions, and the city of Rome for projects like the FAO Green Cities Initiative and the Food Coalition for Food Security.”

The Director-General mentioned the museum’s role as part of FAO’s broader mission, linking it to the organization’s efforts to promote sustainable agricultural food systems. He pointed out that the museum will be a significant element of FAO’s 80th anniversary in 2025, describing it as a milestone that will “further strengthen the bonds of cooperation between FAO and Italy.” He formally invited President Mattarella to inaugurate the museum during the anniversary celebrations, which will reflect on FAO’s progress and focus on future challenges.
