The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) recently launched the Global Family Farming Forum in Rome. This forum acknowledges the essential role that family farmers play in creating sustainable agricultural food systems and addressing the impacts of the climate crisis.

The three-day forum, held from October 15 to 18, 2024, at the FAO headquarters, brings together family farmers, government officials, and experts to explore strategies for promoting food security and sustainable development. It marks the midpoint of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF) from 2019 to 2028, celebrating family farming as the backbone of diverse, innovative, and dynamic agricultural food systems, identifying policy innovations to support family farms, and showcasing successful experiences from around the world.

FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu emphasized that family farmers provide most of the food we consume, accounting for 70 to 80 percent of global food value. “Family farmers are those who best understand the realities of working the land and managing animals, seas, and forests. Their voices and perspectives are vital for our discussions this week,” he stated.

IFAD Vice President Gerardin Mukeshimana highlighted the serious challenges faced by family farmers, who are on the front lines of many crises. He underscored IFAD’s commitment to raising $10 billion over the next three years to boost rural productivity, enhance resilience, and support rural entrepreneurs.

Dominican Republic’s Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz Lopez urged governments to invest in family farming, particularly in technology, to improve productivity and quality of life for small farmers.

The forum also discusses empowering women and young farmers, seeking innovations in public policy, addressing climate resilience, and exploring market opportunities. Special attention is given to gender equality and youth participation in agriculture, recognizing their crucial role in rural communities.

Family farming, with over 550 million farms worldwide, is the backbone of food production. It constitutes more than 90 percent of all farms globally, sustaining rural economies and preserving biodiversity. However, despite their vital role, many family farmers face uncertain livelihoods, particularly in rural areas where poverty and food insecurity are widespread.

The Global Family Farming Forum calls on governments and stakeholders to strengthen their commitment to family farming, ensuring that it remains central to achieving sustainable development goals.
