On October 16, in celebration of World Food Day (WFD), Olam Agri, a leader in the food, feed, and fiber sectors, reinforced its commitment to Nigeria’s food security by sponsoring a series of impactful programs under Eco World Food. For this initiative, 800 food boxes were donated to vulnerable communities, and boreholes were drilled to increase access to clean water for key farming communities.

Prominent activities marking World Food Day included the Eco Food Day initiative sponsored by Olam Agri, which highlighted the importance of boosting domestic food production and promoting healthy diets for residents of Lagos State. Other activities included a road walk organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, a Food Systems Champions Summit that brought together agricultural stakeholders, a quiz competition for secondary school students, and the hosting of a grand finale for World Food Day by the Governor of Lagos State.

Bola Olusanya, the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, praised Olam Agri’s contributions, stating, “Olam Agri is a vital partner in transforming Lagos’s food production landscape. Their strong capabilities in production, processing, packaging, and distribution play a crucial role in enhancing the food value chain. This partnership is essential in achieving our shared goals for food security with the state government.”

In addition to sponsoring these transformative events, Olam Agri partnered with the Lagos Food Bank to distribute 800 food boxes worth 13 million to vulnerable residents. Six hundred food boxes were given to at-risk communities in Makoko and Ajegunle, while 300 boxes were allocated for flood-affected areas in Maiduguri to provide necessary food aid to displaced persons.

Continuing its support for communities, Olam Agri committed to drilling boreholes in two key farming communities, Baur and Egun, where the company operates rice and sesame units set to begin this October. These boreholes will provide clean drinking water, improve food security, and enhance agricultural productivity while reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and improving overall community health.

Anil Nair, Managing Director of Olam Agri Nigeria, emphasized the company’s dedication to food security, saying, “The right to food and nutrition is fundamental to inclusive development. We are committed to increasing access to quality, nutritious, and affordable food for all Nigerians. Our social investment projects, such as sponsoring Eco World Food Day, distributing food boxes, and drilling boreholes, directly contribute to the federal government’s renewed hope agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger.”
