The Minister of Agriculture, Zulfiqar Mustafa, has established a working committee made up of representatives from cooperatives and private sugarcane farmers in the Upper Corentyne area. This initiative is part of an ongoing master plan aimed at effectively using the 30,000 acres of available land to boost agricultural productivity and support local farming communities.

Before forming the committee on Saturday, Minister Mustafa noted that private sugarcane farmers collectively possess about 10,000 acres of land in the region. Additionally, various cooperatives own different amounts of land, resulting in a total of more than 30,000 acres available for farming. This strategic collaboration aims to optimize land use for advanced agricultural development.

He mentioned, “Some farmers have indicated they want to return to sugarcane farming, while others are interested in growing corn or exploring new crops like hemp. Therefore, we want to get started as soon as possible.”

Mustafa reminded attendees that $2 billion has been allocated in the agricultural budget to launch this program. The committee will include various cooperatives such as El Dorado, Landless, Leads Pioneer, Baba Grant, Friendly Farmers, Babylon, Hunter Scheme, and Johannesburg, along with three private sugarcane farmers.

The committee will be chaired by Madanlal Ramraj, the Director General of the ministry, and will also include representatives from various agencies within the ministry. The minister assured, “We will establish this committee, which will work aggressively, and this program will begin soon.”

He added, “This project has been in the works for a long time, so I want to start in Upper Corentyne; the Molson Creek area is coming down next.”

“We previously indicated that some farmers want to restart sugarcane farming, as you know we have once again initiated sugarcane cultivation in Skeldon. This year, we will plant sugarcane on 1,500 hectares, and next year we aim to plant on 5,000 hectares and mechanize the process, but we need to kick off the program.”

Furthermore, Minister Mustafa announced the formation of another committee, led by Regional Vice President Jamal Hussain, to oversee the operation of various pumps in the area. This committee will include representatives from water user associations, the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, the Guyana Rice Development Board, and local farmers. Their collective efforts aim to ensure efficient water management to support the agricultural initiatives in the region. By Saturday evening, it was expected that six pumps within the Corentyne area would be operational to assist farmers.
