Nadi, Fiji – Today, Pacific Island countries began an important meeting aimed at transforming their agricultural food systems to address unique challenges and vulnerabilities related to the climate crisis.
Organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Government of Fiji, the SIDS (Small Island Developing States) Solutions Forum 2024 is a high-level platform running from November 5 to 8. Its goal is to share innovative solutions and demonstrate the impacts and scalability of changing how food is produced, distributed, and consumed in the Pacific island region.
FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, in his opening speech, stated, “The unique characteristics of SIDS make them especially vulnerable to a range of challenges, including food insecurity, malnutrition, the impacts of the climate crisis, economic shocks, and other environmental and demographic pressures.” He noted that despite their vulnerabilities, SIDS hold a treasure trove of knowledge and often play a leading role on international platforms, highlighting critical global issues.

Thirteen SIDS are involved in this initiative, aimed at boosting the production of several key crops in the Pacific region.
Another important program is OCOP, or ‘One Country, One Priority Product’, which empowers countries to identify, promote, and develop agricultural products uniquely tied to their geography, climate, and culture. Examples in the Pacific include turmeric in Fiji, cassava in the Solomon Islands, and cocoa in Samoa.
