The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Achimpong, praised the West African Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) for meeting its poultry production timeline and for launching its first Chicken Road Show at this year’s National Farmers Day exhibition, called AgriFest.
The FSRP Chicken Road Show aims to allow the people of Ghana to sample locally raised broiler chicken.
During the road show, selected beneficiary anchor farmers under the FSRP grilled between 1,000 to 2,000 clean, nutritious, and delicious locally produced chickens for the public to sample.
This five-day fair, organized by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), is an essential part of the National Farmers Day celebrations and will feature various activities.
At the FSRP stand, the sector minister praised this initiative, stating it is a clear way to boost domestic production from the current five percent.
“We currently produce about five percent of our poultry, and through this poultry intensification project, which is part of the FSRP, we aim to increase it over the next five years,” he said.
Through the FSRP, Ghana is on track to feed the domestic market and produce enough for export within the next five years.
The minister assured that Ghanaian chicken is healthy and reliable, emphasizing that the ministry ensures the correct vaccine dosages and proper feed, especially in projects like the FSRP poultry program.
He added, “Due to MoFA’s standards, our locally produced chickens have fewer additives, which helps them last longer in storage compared to imported chicken, which can sometimes have a shelf life of 10 to 15 years.”
At the event, the FSRP stand offered free samples of grilled chicken to visitors.
Accompanying the minister were notable guests, including the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, and other officials from the FSRP.
The West African Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) is a World Bank initiative under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).
MoFA – FSRP Poultry Intensification Scheme (PIS)
MoFA is implementing the FSRP PIS, which aims to revitalize the local broiler industry. The World Bank has allocated $12.5 million for the five-year implementation of the PIS.
Under this scheme, commercial anchor farmers and their smallholder partners will receive support to produce, process, and market at least two million birds annually over the next five years.
Beneficiaries will receive credit for day-old chicks, feed, and vaccines. They will also be trained in best practices and climate-smart technologies within the poultry industry.
They will have access to grants to purchase equipment supporting post-production processing and cold storage facilities/infrastructure.
Thus, the ‘FSRP Chicken Road Show’ is part of the MoFA – FSRP Poultry Intensification Scheme’s implementation activities, aimed at enabling Ghanaians to sample healthy, clean, and affordable Ghanaian broiler chickens.
