Women and men walk slowly and purposefully upstream along the river. They carry buckets and containers of water as if they are very light, not spilling a drop. The group passes by a dozen farmers working in a bean field, discussing adjustments to wooden planks made to hold crops and soil on the steep hill. Water carriers navigate around corners until they reach their destination. They set down their loads and gather under the shade of a protective umbrella. Sunlight shines on the rows of trees growing in black bags.

The men and women start emptying their buckets and containers into the water bins while caring for their trees, which include mango, lemon, coconut, breadfruit, and mahogany. They look hopefully towards their community’s deforested hills and then turn to the tree nursery.

In Chofferd, Haiti, four hundred farmers take care of these trees. In return, they receive high-quality agricultural tools along with improved black bean and pigeon pea seeds. Agronomists from the Haitian organization Smallholder Farmers Alliance conduct a series of training sessions to help farmers improve their methods. This effort is part of the Tree Currency program.

Saint Michael and Saint Peter Church on Onondaga Hill funds the Tree Currency program in Chofferd with matching grants from the Rising Haiti Foundation. During this five-year program, Haitian agronomists from the Smallholder Farmers Alliance lead training sessions, distribute seeds and tools, and monitor tree nursery activities. Once the plants reach a certain size, they are distributed among participants.

The program addresses various concerns in Chofferd. Future trees will help prevent soil erosion, provide shade in a warming climate, and produce fruit to combat hunger. With improved seeds, crop yields are expected to increase, providing farmers with more beans to feed their families and sell. These changes will reduce food insecurity in the community.

For over two decades, Saint Michael and Saint Peter Church has maintained a twin relationship with the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Chofferd. During this time, the community has endured the 2010 earthquake and devastating storms that swept away homes, crops, and livestock. Parishioners in Syracuse have funded the rebuilding of the church, medical clinic, and rectory.

Education has been a primary focus. The Church of Saint Michael and Saint Peter supports teacher salaries and funds a school lunch program, sending $5,000 per month to provide rice and beans or dried fish for over 1,000 students’ hot lunches. For many, this is the best—and sometimes the only—meal of the day.

At the end of the school day, students dressed in blue and white uniforms rush out of their classrooms into the bright sun. In groups, they joke and tease each other on their way home. They pass their parents’ fields, which will soon produce more and better crops, and head towards their small cinder block homes, which will eventually be surrounded by fruit trees—all thanks to the Tree Currency program. These children represent a glimpse of a better future.
