माउंटेन फ्यूचर अवार्ड

इस कार्यक्रम में पहले माउंटेन फ्यूचर अवार्ड का भी अनावरण किया गया, जिसमें युवाओं के नेतृत्व वाली परियोजनाओं पर विशेष ध्यान देने के साथ रचनात्मक, स्थानीय रूप से संचालित समाधानों के माध्यम से नवाचार पर प्रकाश डाला गया।

यह पुरस्कार माउंटेन पार्टनरशिप सद्भावना राजदूत स्टेला जीन द्वारा तीन श्रेणियों में प्रदान किया गया: युवा, अनुकूलन और नवाचार। युवा वर्ग में वैश्विक मंच माउंटेन यूथ हब विजेता बनकर उभरा। भारत की एकड़ बर्फ ने सतत जल प्रबंधन के लिए अपने स्वचालित बर्फ जलाशयों के लिए अनुकूलन श्रेणी का दावा किया। जलवायु अनुकूलन के लिए स्वदेशी ज्ञान को पुनर्जीवित करने नामक रवांडा की पहल ने नवाचार श्रेणी में जीत हासिल की।

Rome – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations celebrated International Mountain Day 2024 today at its headquarters in Rome. During the event, they launched a new publication on climate change adaptation in mountain areas and announced the winners of the Mountain Future Awards for the first time.

Under the theme “Mountain Solutions for a Sustainable Future – Innovation, Adaptation, and Youth,” the event focused on showcasing the resilience and simplicity of mountain communities in addressing biodiversity conservation, the climate crisis, and poverty. It also called for action to support sustainable mountain development and highlight innovative solutions for a more resilient future.

FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu shared a video message saying, “This year’s theme honors indigenous peoples, youth, women, and local communities who are most affected by major global challenges.”

He emphasized the need for investment in digital inclusion and innovative financing for small and medium enterprises in mountain areas to improve livelihoods. “It is essential to empower young people to drive change through technology, education, and entrepreneurship while valuing traditional techniques and knowledge,” he said.

Mountains cover 27 percent of the Earth’s surface and are home to some of the world’s most fragile ecosystems and nearly half of global biodiversity hotspots. They provide fresh water, control weather patterns, and are essential carbon sinks, but they face significant pressures from climate change, land degradation, and increasing economic marginalization.

Launch of a New Publication

A new FAO publication titled Promoting Innovation and Tradition: Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation in Mountains was launched during the event. It showcases successful adaptation strategies from around the world while highlighting the challenges posed by climate change to mountain ecosystems and communities.

Key Messages from the Report:

• Indigenous peoples, women, and youth play a crucial role in promoting climate resilience in mountain areas through their local knowledge and leadership.
• Knowledge sharing and education are integral to climate adaptation strategies, empowering community-centered farmers to adopt climate-resilient practices, thereby enhancing long-term adaptive capacity.
• Investing in sustainable mountain development through innovative financing mechanisms like public-private partnerships is critical for driving climate action in mountains.
• Nature-based solutions are vital for ecosystem conservation and supporting biodiversity.
• Mountain agricultural food systems should be integrated into national policies as key solutions to address the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Mountain Future Award

The event also unveiled the first Mountain Future Awards, highlighting innovation through creative, locally operated solutions with a specific focus on youth-led projects.

The awards were presented by Mountain Partnership Goodwill Ambassador Stella Jean in three categories: Youth, Adaptation, and Innovation. The Mountain Youth Hub won in the Youth category at a global level. Akada Snow from India claimed the Adaptation category for their automated snow reservoirs aimed at sustainable water management. A Rwandan initiative called “Reviving Indigenous Knowledge for Climate Adaptation” won the Innovation category.

The winners will receive seed funding, project visibility, and incubation support from the FAO Mountain Partnership Secretariat, backed by the governments of Italy, Switzerland, Andorra, and the FAO.

The goal is to demonstrate how local actions can advance global progress towards resilient and sustainable mountain ecosystems.

A short video showcasing innovative collaborations between Italian designer Vivienne Ferragamo and Guatemalan artisans under the Fashion for Fragile Ecosystems initiative, funded by Italy, was also presented. This project aims to improve mountain livelihoods by preserving cultural heritage and strengthening local economies.

Ambassadors from Italy, Guatemala, and Kyrgyzstan attended the event, which included the launch of initiatives to promote mountain sustainability, interactive sessions, dance performances, and tastings of mountain-produced food.
