Jaydeep Mazumdar, Secretary (East) of the MEA, told the Canadian Chargé that the Trudeau government’s actions have put the safety of Indian diplomats and officials "at risk" due to the environment of extremism and violence.
"We do not trust the current Canadian government’s commitment to ensuring their safety. Therefore, the Indian government has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials," the MEA stated.
It also noted that India reserves the right to take further steps in response to the Trudeau government’s support for extremism, violence, and separatism against India.
According to the Washington Post, citing unnamed Canadian officials, Canada on Monday ordered six Indian diplomats, including Verma and a senior consular official in Toronto, to leave the country. Verma and the other officials are expected to return to India within a few days.
Tensions between India and Canada escalated after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of possible involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s murder made in September last year. Nijjar was shot dead in Surrey, British Columbia, in June last year. New Delhi had dismissed Trudeau’s claims as "ridiculous."
Wheeler stated that his government has provided credible and irrefutable evidence linking Indian government agents to the murder of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil. He urged India to take the allegations seriously.
"Getting to the bottom of this is in the interest of both our countries and our people. Canada is ready to cooperate with India," he said.
