Farmers, led by the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Ugaraha, gathered in the village of Maisar Khana and accused the government of not paying them the promised compensation for their land, which was taken for the mega infrastructure project.
A large group of farmers from Sangrur also broke through barricades and confronted police in the village of Duneawala, Bathinda. The farmers clashed with the police and attacked them with sticks, leading to the police firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
The farmers were on their way to reoccupy land acquired under the Bharatmala project, led by Joginder Singh Ugaraha, president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Ugaraha.
“All farmers from Bathinda whose land was acquired for the project have been compensated. None of these protesting farmers are from Bathinda; they have come from other districts to create unrest. We have returned the land to the farmers,” stated a senior police officer from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The officer added, “If anyone has an issue and is not satisfied with the compensation they received, they should approach the mediation court to resolve the matter. I urge these people not to take the law into their own hands.”
Meanwhile, a district official mentioned that land was acquired for the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway under the Bharatmala project, covering approximately 62.7 kilometers within Bathinda’s administrative limits.
“Out of the total amount of 731 crores for land acquisition, 693 crores have already been distributed to the farmers. We are here to ensure possession of the land we are waiting to acquire since the government has not yet made the second payment,” the district official stated.
On the other hand, farmer leaders argue that the compensation varies significantly from one location to another, which is the basis of their protest against this inequality in payments.
The district official clarified that the disparity in compensation is due to the location of the land. He explained, “The compensation for land inside villages is 50 lakh rupees, while for land adjacent to the highway, it is 70 lakh rupees.”
During the clashes, around five to six police officers and several farmers sustained injuries. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
