केंद्रीय सहकारी और गृह मंत्री अमित शाह लगातार इस बात पर जोर देते हैं कि डेयरी क्षेत्र की प्रगति सहकारी संस्थाओं में है। हाल ही में राष्ट्रीय डेयरी विकास बोर्ड ने अपनी गोल्डन जुबली मनाई। इस दौरान उन्होंने सहकारी की महत्वता पर बात की और कहा कि केवल सहकारी में शामिल होकर ही पशुपालक दूध का सही मूल्य प्राप्त कर सकते हैं। पशुपालन में नई तकनीकों के लाभ प्राप्त करने के लिए भी सहकारी में शामिल होना जरूरी है। विश्व प्रसिद्ध अमूल के अलावा ऐसे कई अन्य उदाहरण हैं। उन्होंने बताया कि देश में 8 करोड़ डेयरी किसान परिवार हैं। इनमें से केवल 1.5 करोड़ परिवार सहकारी में जुड़े हुए हैं। केंद्र सरकार बाकी 6.5 करोड़ परिवारों को भी जोड़ने की योजनाएँ बना रही है।

डेयरी मंत्री राजीव रंजन खुद कई कार्यक्रमों में डेयरी सहकारी के बारे में बात कर चुके हैं। वे कहते हैं कि दूध में मिलावट का खेल अव्यवस्थित क्षेत्र के कारण चल रहा है। यदि दूध का व्यवसाय व्यवस्थित हो जाए तो मिलावट को काफी हद तक नियंत्रित किया जा सकता है।
