It’s important to note that agricultural products are typically shipped in bulk carriers rather than container ships, so the strike is not expected to significantly affect most wheat, corn, and soybean exports, according to Joseph Glauber, a senior research fellow at the Washington, D.C.-based International Food Policy Research Institute, in a report on Monday.

However, U.S. exports of meat, dairy, and poultry may be disrupted, which could heavily impact developing countries, Glauber wrote.

According to Glauber, last year, almost half of the $7.15 billion worth of beef, pork, poultry, dairy, and egg exports to developing countries went through East and Gulf Coast ports. This figure does not include exports to Mexico, most of which is transported by truck or train.

Glauber stated, “A long strike could force importers to seek alternative supplies from either West Coast ports or other countries.” “U.S. exports of meat, dairy, and poultry are particularly vulnerable.
