In 2023, Ghana’s non-traditional exports (NTE) saw an increase of 11.75%, contributing 24% to the country’s total exports, as announced by Dr. Afua Asabia Asare, the CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA).
This growth generated approximately $447 million in additional revenue from exports.
At a bi-weekly briefing hosted by the Information Ministry in Accra, Dr. Asare stated that the growth of top non-traditional exports between 2022 and 2023 was nearly 78%, with total export destinations reaching around 156 countries.
She described this achievement as unprecedented in the authority’s history, noting that it marks the first time the country’s NTE sector has truly developed and rapidly expanded.
“As I speak with you, we have increased exports. For 2023, we have boosted exports by 11.75%, with a contribution of approximately 24% to the total national exports, which is due to various interventions,” she emphasized.
Dr. Asare explained that GEPA is focusing on four main sectors: agriculture, manufacturing, arts and crafts, and services. She mentioned that “there was a time when we didn’t focus much on services, but in recent years, it has become one of our key export areas.”
Currently, there are over 3,000 registered exporters and more than 400 different non-traditional export products under GEPA.
To achieve this recent success, GEPA has collaborated with several agencies, including the Ghana Export-Import Bank, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Ghana Enterprises Agency, the Ghana Free Zones Authority, the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), and the Federation of Association of Ghana Exporters.
“All these organizations are working together with GEPA to enhance the country’s exports. The top earner in non-traditional exports, particularly from sectors like iron, steel, and steel rods, is a significant contributor,” she said.
Dr. Asare noted that although there are around 625 exportable products as part of the national export development strategy, 17 of these products have been prioritized.
She also mentioned that the established GEPA Impact Hub serves as a one-stop home for all information and technology needs related to exports, including collaboration with organizations like the Food and Drugs Authority and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Dr. Asare added that GEPA has set up a library, emphasizing that they have an IT resource center available for those who wish to achieve their export goals through the GEPA Impact Hub.
