Senator urges mandatory agriculture studies in schools | (सीनेटर ने एफजी से स्कूलों में कृषि अध्ययन अनिवार्य करने का आग्रह किया )

कृषि और ग्रामीण विकास पर सीनेट समिति के अध्यक्ष, सीनेटर सालिउ मुस्तफा ने माध्यमिक विद्यालय स्तर पर अनिवार्य, व्यावहारिक कृषि अध्ययन शुरू करने की वकालत की है।

सीनेटर ने गुरुवार को इलोरिन विश्वविद्यालय में कृषि विस्तार और ग्रामीण विकास विभाग द्वारा आयोजित एक सार्वजनिक व्याख्यान के दौरान यह अपील की।

क्वारा स्टेट यूनिवर्सिटी, मैलेटे के प्रो. बिंटा सुलेमान द्वारा दिए गए मुख्य भाषण में, सीनेटर मुस्तफा ने खेती को महज जीविका के रूप में देखे जाने से एक व्यवहार्य पेशे में बदलने के लिए कम उम्र से ही व्यावहारिक कृषि शिक्षा की आवश्यकता पर जोर दिया।

“अगर हमें अपनी बढ़ती आबादी को खाना खिलाना है और आयात पर अपनी अत्यधिक निर्भरता को कम करना है तो हमें कृषि के बारे में गंभीर होने की जरूरत है।

उन्होंने कहा, “माध्यमिक विद्यालयों में कृषि को अनिवार्य और व्यावहारिक विषय बनाना उस दिशा में एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम है।”

मुस्तफा ने युवा नाइजीरियाई लोगों के बीच कृषि में घटती रुचि पर चिंता व्यक्त की और इसके लिए खेती को श्रम-गहन और अलाभकारी मानने की पुरानी धारणा को जिम्मेदार ठहराया।

उन्होंने तर्क दिया कि छात्रों को आधुनिक, प्रौद्योगिकी-संचालित कृषि – जैसे मशीनीकृत खेती, कृषि व्यवसाय और टिकाऊ प्रथाओं से अवगत कराने से इस क्षेत्र में रुचि फिर से बढ़ सकती है।

“इज़राइल और भारत जैसे देशों ने दिखाया है कि कृषि शिक्षा पर ज़ोर देने से उनकी खाद्य उत्पादन क्षमताओं में कैसे बदलाव आ सकता है। नाइजीरिया को यह सुनिश्चित करके इसका पालन करना चाहिए कि हर बच्चा न केवल खेती के सिद्धांत बल्कि व्यावहारिक पहलुओं को भी सीखे, ”उन्होंने कहा।

उन्होंने इस बात पर भी जोर दिया कि अनिवार्य कृषि अध्ययन बढ़ती बेरोजगारी को दूर करने, युवाओं को खेती, कृषि व्यवसाय और संबंधित उद्योगों में उद्यम करने के लिए कौशल से लैस करने में मदद कर सकता है। उन्होंने तर्क दिया कि एक कृषि-केंद्रित पाठ्यक्रम, देश के खाद्य आयात बिल को कम करने में सार्थक योगदान देने में सक्षम समस्या-समाधानकर्ता तैयार करेगा।

“अपना पेट भरने से परे, हमें कृषि को एक व्यवसाय के रूप में देखना चाहिए। कृषि का मतलब केवल भोजन का उत्पादन करना नहीं होना चाहिए, बल्कि इसे एक व्यवसाय मॉडल के रूप में देखा जाना चाहिए जो लाखों नाइजीरियाई लोगों के लिए धन पैदा कर सकता है, ”उन्होंने कहा।

सीनेटर ने शिक्षा, कृषि और नीति निर्माण में हितधारकों से इन विचारों के कार्यान्वयन को सुनिश्चित करने में सहयोग करने का आग्रह किया।

उन्होंने पाठ्यक्रम को संशोधित करने के प्रयासों के लिए संघीय शिक्षा मंत्रालय की प्रशंसा की, लेकिन आगाह किया कि नीति को कार्रवाई में तब्दील किया जाना चाहिए।

“बहुत हो चुकी है बातचीत. अब हमें ठोस कार्रवाइयों की आवश्यकता है, और इसमें यह सुनिश्चित करना शामिल है कि स्कूल इस व्यावहारिक कृषि शिक्षा को वास्तविकता बनाने के लिए आवश्यक सुविधाओं – खेतों, ग्रीनहाउस और आधुनिक कृषि उपकरणों से सुसज्जित हैं, ” उन्होंने निष्कर्ष निकाला।

यह आह्वान ऐसे समय में आया है जब नाइजीरिया को कृषि क्षेत्र में कई चुनौतियों का सामना करना पड़ रहा है, जिसमें बढ़ती कृषि आबादी, आधुनिक कृषि प्रौद्योगिकियों तक खराब पहुंच और कम उपयोग की जाने वाली कृषि योग्य भूमि शामिल है।

विशेषज्ञों ने चेतावनी दी है कि महत्वपूर्ण नीतिगत बदलाव के बिना, देश का खाद्य सुरक्षा हासिल करने का लक्ष्य अप्राप्य रह सकता है।

Senator Salihu Mustafa, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, has urged the implementation of mandatory practical agricultural studies at the secondary school level.

The senator made this appeal during a public lecture organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at the University of Ilorin on Thursday.

In the main address delivered by Prof. Binta Suleiman from Kwara State University, Senator Mustafa stressed the need for practical agricultural education from an early age to transform farming from merely a means of livelihood into a viable profession.

“If we want to feed our growing population and reduce our excessive reliance on imports, we need to take agriculture seriously,” he said.

He added, “Making agriculture a compulsory and practical subject in secondary schools is an important step in that direction.”

Mustafa expressed concern over the declining interest in agriculture among Nigerian youth, attributing it to the old perception that farming is labor-intensive and unprofitable.

He argued that introducing students to modern, technology-driven agriculture—such as mechanized farming, agribusiness, and sustainable practices—could rekindle interest in this field.

“Countries like Israel and India have shown how emphasizing agricultural education can transform their food production capabilities. Nigeria should ensure that every child learns not just the theories of farming but also its practical aspects,” he said.

He also emphasized that mandatory agricultural studies could help alleviate rising unemployment by equipping young people with skills to venture into farming, agribusiness, and related industries. He argued that an agriculture-focused curriculum could develop effective problem-solvers capable of reducing the country’s food import bill.

“Beyond just filling our stomachs, we need to view agriculture as a business. Agriculture shouldn’t only mean food production; it should also be seen as a business model that can generate wealth for millions of Nigerians,” he stated.

The senator called on stakeholders in education, agriculture, and policy-making to work together to implement these ideas.

He praised the Federal Ministry of Education for efforts to revise the curriculum but warned that policies need to be translated into action.

“There has been too much talk. Now we need concrete actions, which must include ensuring schools are equipped with the necessary facilities—farms, greenhouses, and modern agricultural tools—to turn this practical agricultural education into a reality,” he concluded.

This call comes at a time when Nigeria faces numerous challenges in the agricultural sector, including a growing farming population, poor access to modern agricultural technologies, and underutilized arable land.

Experts have warned that without significant policy changes, the country’s goal of achieving food security may remain unattainable.
