From Camilla to Capitol Hill
From her parents’ farm in Camilla, Georgia, to Capitol Hill, Harden has been a strong advocate for agriculture.
“Most people in Washington don’t get the chance to grow up on a dirt road, but I’m glad I did. All of my decisions, choices, and successes are built on that dirt,” she said.
A former UGA student, Harden spent her childhood surrounded by agriculture and participating in 4-H activities, which gave her the confidence to find ways to stay involved in the industry that raised her. Although she didn’t plan to return to her family’s farm in Mitchell County after graduation, she developed a strong passion for public policy.
“I wanted to do something big, and as I realized how policy affected my own family, I felt truly inspired. I knew I wasn’t going back to the farm, but I could still help people understand that agriculture is our livelihood,” Harden explained.
Holding her diploma, Harden moved directly from Athens to Washington, D.C., two weeks after graduation from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at UGA. She spent her early years in the capital working for a Georgia congressman, gaining valuable experience on some of the most critical issues facing agriculture and learning how to communicate effectively about these challenges on national and international platforms.
The Value of Listening
Today, Harden believes that the key to success in her field lies not only in the ability to communicate but also in the capacity to listen. Throughout her roles as Deputy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as Senior Vice President at Corteva, and in other leadership positions, her primary aim has been the same: to nourish the world.
“These days, I listen with capital ‘L’, which means truly learning by listening. I want to connect with those I may not know well or understand different perspectives from. We are working on issues that matter – climate concerns, labor issues, food geopolitics – and I want to talk with people, not at them,” Harden said.
Returning to UGA to deliver the 2024 D.W. Brooks Lecture, Harden aims to inspire future communicators, share the importance of engaging in policy, discuss lessons learned over her career, and most importantly, show attendees the image of that dirt road where it all began, the raw path that shaped her.
Every year, CAES hosts these annual lectures and awards in honor of D.W. Brooks, a former student of CAES and the founder of Gold Kist Inc. Brooks was a lifelong learner and leader dedicated to improving lives through innovation, and CAES honors these leaders and awardees in his memory.
This year, the college will recognize six CAES and Extension faculty who have provided exceptional service to UGA’s land-grant mission with D.W. Brooks awards.

Excellence in Teaching: Charles Robert Dove, Animal and Dairy Science Department
Robert Dove was raised on a farm in central Missouri where he raised cattle, pigs, horses, poultry, and row crops. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Missouri and a doctorate from Iowa State University. Dove has been on the CAES faculty for over 35 years, serving as a professor of swine nutrition and as the undergraduate coordinator and state swine specialist for the Animal and Dairy Science Department at UGA Cooperative Extension. Over the past 20 years, Dove has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on practical applications of learning and content.
Excellence in Research: Daniela Linó Lourenço, Animal and Dairy Science Department
Daniela Lourenço is an associate professor in animal breeding, genetics, and genomics at CAES. Her research focuses on improving livestock production, health, fitness, and efficiency using genomic information, developing statistical methods and software for genetic evaluation and genome-wide association, and addressing issues related to the use of big data and multiomics information. She actively collaborates with several breeding companies in the U.S. and internationally, and her multi-species genetic research program has secured over $10 million in funding from government and private sources since 2015. Fairchild travels extensively both domestically and internationally, offering seminars on broiler management and poultry house environmental control principles. During his 29 years as an agent, he has remained committed to professional development, earning the title of Senior Public Service Associate in 2020. Since 2012, he has served as the agricultural and natural resources agent and extension coordinator in Cook County, and has previously worked in Crisp County from 2006 to 2012 and Quitman County from 1998 to 2006. He began his Extension career in Randolph County in 1995. Price has received 12 national awards, 17 state awards, and the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents during its annual meeting in 2010. His contributions in research and education, presentations, community development, and scholarly publications have significantly enhanced the reputation of the college and university.
Excellence in Diversity: Oluyinka A. Olukosi, Poultry Science Department
Oluyinka Olukosi was born in Nigeria, earning a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and a master’s degree in animal science from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria and a doctorate from Purdue University. He joined the Poultry Science Department as an assistant professor in 2018 and has since been promoted to associate professor. Olukosi has developed an internationally recognized research program in poultry nutrition that covers three main areas: feed ingredient evaluation, nutrient management, and the nutrition-gut health interaction. Ramesh Selvaraj holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a master’s degree from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, a second master’s degree from Oregon State University, and a Ph.D. in immunology from the University of California, Davis. Selvaraj’s lab was the first to identify and characterize chicken T regulatory cells. He teaches “Nutritional Immunology in Animal Systems” to undergraduate and graduate students at UGA. A member of the Poultry Science Association since 2001, he has regularly served as a section program chair and judge for student presentations at their annual meetings.
