The 2024 Morobe Agricultural Show took place on October 19-20 at the Lai Showground.
As always, exhibitions from key industry agencies like the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) and Trukai Industries attracted significant interest from attendees.
Many small farmers attended the show with one main goal: to learn new ideas that they could bring back to improve their farms.
One such attendee was Imma Dadé, a taro farmer from the Kabwum district. He usually sells his taro at the main market in Lai city. However, he doesn’t earn much from his sales, so he decided to learn more about taro and the markets available for it.
Therefore, he took the opportunity to visit the NARI stall and speak with staff from Wantok Produce Limited about their arrangement to buy and export PNG taro to foreign markets.
“Attending the show confirmed what I heard from NARI about their plans to buy taro from local farmers,” he said.
He added, “It has truly inspired me to improve my plot and produce quality taro for my livelihood.”
He was advised to learn more about soil management, pest and disease control, and best practices for recommended crops at the Moem Research Center of the institute.
Imma is eager to share what he learns with other farmers in his community to promote good taro farming practices and provide opportunities to sell taro through Wantok Produce Limited via NARI.
