On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Malaysia, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made an official visit to Egypt from November 9 to November 12, 2024, at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

The two leaders engaged in discussions on November 10, 2024, where they talked about bilateral relations and exchanged views on global issues of mutual interest.

This trip marks Anwar Ibrahim’s second visit to Egypt as Prime Minister and reflects the growing ties that benefit both countries. Both sides agreed to elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership level in the near future, aiming for further progress and development, as well as supporting efforts for a stable and just world.

President El-Sisi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim agreed to enhance political relations by increasing high-level visits. In this regard, Malaysia is set to host the second meeting of the Egypt-Malaysia Joint Committee and bilateral consultations as soon as an agreement is reached by both parties.

Furthermore, the leaders expressed confidence in the ongoing growth of mutual trade and investment, discussing the economic potential of both nations.

They also appreciated efforts to deepen cooperation in areas like the digital economy, agricultural products, renewable energy, infrastructure development, transportation, and the industrial sector, including semiconductor manufacturing.

Both parties highlighted that their extensive trade and investment ties are based on mutual interests in free and fair trade. They also agreed on the significance of trade agreements with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) for the benefit of both nations.

President El-Sisi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the strong bilateral cooperation in defense and security. They agreed on necessary measures to enhance collaboration in these areas, including regular communication, joint training, counter-terrorism initiatives, and addressing international crimes such as cyber threats and cryptocurrency fraud. The establishment of a Malaysian military attaché office in Cairo in May 2024 highlights Malaysia’s commitment to deepening defense cooperation with Egypt.

As Malaysia takes on the Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, it expressed its willingness to work alongside Egypt to strengthen ties between the two entities. Furthermore, Malaysia encouraged Egypt to bolster its partnership with ASEAN based on its significant role as a founding member of the African Union.

Concerning recent developments in the Middle East, both parties agreed on the need to advocate for peace and security in the region. They discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and condemned the Israeli war on Gaza. Malaysia also appreciated Egypt’s efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery to Palestinians in urgent need in Gaza.

Both sides confirmed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, including the right to establish an independent Palestinian state, and called on the United Nations to consider Palestine’s application for full membership in accordance with the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on May 10, 2024.

Additionally, both parties condemned Israel’s ongoing violations of international law, humanitarian law, and human rights law. They denounced Israeli actions that violate Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through ongoing incursions and airstrikes, which have resulted in over 2,000 innocent civilian deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure.

They emphasized the necessity of an immediate ceasefire to end this humanitarian disaster and preserve Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both parties expressed full support for the Lebanese state and for the complete implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701, aiming to ensure peace and security in the region.

Furthermore, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to accelerate efforts to address climate change issues, agreeing on a balanced approach between climate ambitions and sustainable development.

In relation to BRICS, both parties welcomed the approval of BRICS leaders on October 23, 2024, in Kazan, Russia, to add new partners to the BRICS category, which includes 13 new countries. Malaysia hopes to work collaboratively with Egypt and other BRICS members toward full membership in BRICS and to promote the agenda of the global south.

Egypt and Malaysia announced their eagerness to expedite the completion of several pending memoranda of understanding and agreements for more dynamic and effective cooperation in various fields. During this occasion, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the signing and exchange of a memorandum of understanding between Egypt’s Ministry of Religious Endowments and the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia in the field of Islamic affairs.
