Orange County is taking measures to prevent an unwanted pest invasion. The county is collaborating with the California Department of Food and Agriculture to target the Oriental fruit fly.
“They are not native to California, and if we allow them to establish here, they can be harmful,” said Orange County Agricultural Commissioner Jose Arriaga.
In October, eight Oriental fruit flies were identified by detection teams in Garden Grove and Santa Ana. This fly has no natural enemies and can destroy fruits and vegetables.
“They can lay eggs on over 230 different agricultural items, including residential ones like citrus, oranges, apples, and avocados,” explained Arriaga. “This could ruin the fruit, making it inedible.”
A quarantine has been initiated in an 88-square-mile area where the flies were found.
Arriaga stated that the purpose of the quarantine is to restrict the movement of agricultural items to prevent the flies from spreading.
He added that if they do not respond appropriately, the flies could pose a threat to residents’ ability to grow their own fruits and vegetables.
Traps have been set up in the quarantine zone.
Arriaga said, “If there are flies, bait stations will attract them and help eliminate them.”
However, residents are asked to help.
Arriaga urged, “We ask them not to take any unprocessed fruits or vegetables out of the area. They are safe to eat at home, but please do not share them with neighbors, as you might unknowingly spread larvae that could extend the quarantine.”
No flies have been reported since November 1.
The quarantine in the affected area is expected to remain in place until June 2025, although it could expand if more Oriental fruit flies are detected elsewhere.
