Lincoln – The Nebraska Farm Bureau has selected Steve Nelson from Xtall as the recipient of its highest honor, the Silver Eagle Award for 2024.

This award will be presented to Nelson on December 10 during the 2024 Nebraska Farm Bureau Annual Meeting and Conference in Kearney.

Mark McHarg, president of NEFB, stated, “Nelson has dedicated his entire life to agriculture, demonstrating unwavering commitment and service to the agricultural community in Nebraska.”

McHarg added, “He has worked passionately as an advocate and representative, striving to enhance the well-being of farm and ranch families across the state.”

Nelson began his agricultural career in the early 1970s while still a high school student. Today, he and his wife, Alma, grow corn, hybrid seed corn, and soybeans on their family farm, which has been in operation for six generations.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nelson began his career with the Farm Bureau, serving in various roles on the Kearney/Franklin County Farm Bureau Board.

He was elected to the state board of directors representing the South Central District in 1997 and later served as first vice president in 2002 and president in 2011.

In 2014, Nelson was elected to the board of directors of the American Farm Bureau Federation and has served on several committees.

He has accompanied governors and AFBF on trade missions to countries such as China, Costa Rica, Cuba, England, France, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Taiwan.

When Nelson retired as president of the Nebraska Farm Bureau in 2020, the organization honored him with the Steve Nelson Yeter Institute on International Trade Internship Award. This award allows UN-L students to work at the Washington International Trade Association in Washington, D.C., gaining experience in the trade policy community.

After completing the internship, the interns use the skills they gained to plan educational programs on important agricultural trade policy issues for students and the public.

Nelson is a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Xtall. Following the unexpected death of his daughter, Sara, due to surgery in 2006, he and his wife became supportive members of the Hastings-area chapter of Compassionate Friends.

They have two other children, Scott (wife Amy) and Stacy (husband Bobby), along with five grandchildren: Sam, Luke, Brita, Bo, and Natalie.
