This is the opinion of Ngo Chung Khan, Deputy Director of the Multilateral Trade Policy Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
In addition to competitive pricing, the UK market has high product quality requirements. Khan mentioned that there are strict technical barriers in the market, such as food hygiene and safety regulations, especially for agricultural products.
He also noted significant changes in consumer tastes and trends in the UK, with British consumers increasingly concerned about health, leading to a rise in popular products like vegetarian, sugar-free, and gluten-free foods.
To effectively utilize the UKVFTA, Khan suggested that businesses should be more proactive in understanding the agreement’s contents and commitments, alongside support and guidance from state management agencies.
He advised local companies to ensure compliance, accelerate product development, and effectively focus on meeting market demands.
In response, the Vietnam Trade Office will continue to foster networks with the UK’s business community and Vietnamese foreign enterprises in the UK to connect and introduce local firms to potential partners.

In 2021, the first year of the UKVFTA’s effectiveness, bilateral trade between Vietnam and the UK reached $6.6 billion, marking a 17.2% year-on-year increase.
Despite a decline in two-way trade in 2022 due to global and UK economic challenges, exports from Vietnam to the UK still grew year-on-year by 2%, with some key export items recording double-digit increases.
In the first nine months of this year, two-way trade reached nearly $6.5 billion, with Vietnamese exports totaling $5.7 billion—a 22% increase compared to the previous year.
Besides trade, there has also been an improvement in UK investments in Vietnam since the implementation of the UKVFTA. As of October 2024, the UK had more than 580 projects in Vietnam, with total registered investment capital exceeding $4.4 billion, ranking 15th among nearly 150 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.
Khan emphasized that these figures reflect the effectiveness of the UKVFTA in facilitating export and investment activities between the two countries.
