The Department of Agriculture (DA) is considering importing key agricultural products due to significant losses in local production caused by recent storms.
A decision on this matter will be made this week, according to Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel De Mesa on Tuesday.
De Mesa pointed out the major impact of storms like Cristine, Leon, Marce, Nika, Ofel, and Pepito that have hit the country over the past few months, stating, “The effect of these ongoing storms has been substantial.”
He mentioned that Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has instructed the Bureau of Plant Industry to monitor consistently high prices and to recommend potential strategies within the week.
“Our priority is to source vegetables from other producing areas. If this is sufficient to control prices, there will be no need to import, but if necessary, we will proceed with imports.”
De Mesa noted that the Philippines currently imports only a minimal amount of vegetables. However, with agricultural losses already at P10 billion due to the storms, he stated the government is exploring all options to ensure sufficient supply.
He also mentioned discussions about importing additional fish. In April, Secretary Tiu Laurel issued an order to allow the import of 30,000 metric tons (MT) of pelagic fish species to boost supply during the closed fishing season.
