Heffield Primary School, located in the Blue Mountain area of St. Thomas, recently received much-needed support from the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA). This support included additional ink cartridges valued at a total of $75,000 and a brand new printer, along with $100,000 in cash.
During a handover ceremony on Tuesday, November 20, the school principal, Ms. Usela Ramokan Stephens, shared several challenges the school is facing.
“As a small multi-grade school, we often struggle with a lack of teaching and learning materials. We need much more. In a multi-grade setting, having several grades in one class makes it hard to divide the learning process for each student,” Ms. Stephens explained.
She added that thanks to JACRA’s donation, the school will be able to purchase more educational materials, for which she is very grateful.
“Receiving these gifts is truly a blessing for us, especially the printer. We were having difficulties with our old printer, which slowed down our printing activities, exams, administrative tasks, and much more. So, we are really happy about this donation,” she continued.
These contributions to Heffield Primary School are part of JACRA’s broader efforts to help revive farming communities.
According to Acting Director General Wayne Hunter, this is a small step toward meeting the needs of farmers.
Mr. Hunter said, “After the devastation caused by storms Beryl and Tropical Storm Rafael, JACRA is now doubling down on its efforts to reach out to farmers, fulfill their needs, and provide assistance.”
“Agriculture is not only vital for economic livelihood but also for our development as a nation. Therefore, we must ensure that agriculture continues to move toward improvement,” he added.
