CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett has called on the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) to make realistic and practical decisions that everyone in the community can rely on.
During the opening of the 59th regular meeting of COTED on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana, Dr. Barnett urged trade ministers to fully use the treaty rules and flexibility, especially for sensitive agenda items.
She appreciated progress in various areas, such as the implementation of approved worker categories under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) free movement of skills scheme.
“As COTED discusses, we are reminded that the creators of the revised treaty wanted to maintain a careful balance between community interests and the interests of our sovereign member states. They did not intend to promote winners and losers; rather, the goal is to create a community that supports advanced trade, investment, production integration, and development for all,” Dr. Barnett stated.
The meeting’s chair, Honorable Senator Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry for Trinidad and Tobago, highlighted the wide-ranging agenda that ministers will discuss during the two-day meeting. Discussions will focus on issues like the free movement of community citizens, a revised draft policy on mergers and acquisitions regulation, trade in goods, and the status of the community’s intellectual property framework.
On the external trade front, the ministers will concentrate on the 13th World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference, CARICOM-Colombia talks, and multilateral development related to partial scope agreements.
“I want to emphasize important points today,” said Minister Gopee-Scoon, “In COTED, we are tasked with addressing the single market and trade and economic development issues that are at the forefront of our community’s agenda.”
